Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Jail

Cosby, 81, was declared a "sexually violent predator" before a judge sentenced him for drugging and sexually assaulting Temple University women's basketball administrator Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia home in 2004.

Bill Cosby was sentenced Tuesday to at least three years in prison, a decision that was welcomed by numerous women who have publicly accused him of sexual assault.

Constand's accusation was one of many against Cosby, who was handed the nickname "America's Dad" for his role of Dr. Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show.

NY magazine contacted 42 colleges that had granted Cosby honorary degrees and found that, as of June, 33 of them, including the college he attended, Temple University, had revoked the honor.

The punishment made him the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be sent to prison and all but completed the dizzying, late-in-life fall from grace for the comedian, TV star and breaker of racial barriers.

Defence lawyers had argued that Cosby should be confined to house arrest, as he has been since his conviction, arguing that he is too old and too frail - the actor says he is legally blind - to endure a correctional facility.

But social media also was rife with comparisons between Cosby and President Trump, disgraced NBC host Matt Lauer, accused former Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein and others accused of sexual assault or sexual improprieties but not convicted.

Meanwhile, Constand said in a statement submitted to the court and released Tuesday that she has had to cope with years of anxiety and self-doubt that have left her "stuck in a holding pattern".

Cosby has remained out of prison for the past five months on $1 million bail, and his lawyers said they plan to appeal his convictions.

A forensics expert who analyzed the recording told Cosby's defense team that it was "not a true representation of the original content or conversation", according to Camille Cosby's statement. He could end up in a long-term medical care unit.

Because he was convicted on three counts of assault, Cosby had faced up to 30 years in prison for the charges.

Chelan Lasha, who accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 1986, when she was 17, said she'd hoped for a harsher sentence. He will need to undergo lifelong counseling and he is also being forced to register on a sex offender's list. Prosecutors had been seeking the maximum sentence of five to ten years.

Women's rights attorney Gloria Allred reacts to the sentencing of Billy Cosby on September 25, 2018. "So it's taken a long time to get there", Mr. Steele said.

The proceedings took place as another extraordinary #MeToo drama continued to unfold on Capitol Hill, where Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh faces allegations of sexual misconduct from more than three decades ago.

He will be one of 86 inmates over age 80 held by Pennsylvania's Department of Corrections, where the two oldest inmates are both 91, Worden said.

As Vox points out, roughly 60 women have shared stories of alleged sexual assault, ranging from groping to forced kissing to rape, at Cosby's hands.

His first trial ended in a hung jury.
