Apple announces Watch 4, will come with ECG, Fall detection and more

Apple announces Watch 4, will come with ECG, Fall detection and more

The microphone has been shifted away from the speaker to reduce echo, while the back of the Series 4 Apple Watch is made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal.

Apple Watch Series 3 now starts at just £279 for the 38 millimetre option without cellular functionality.

Apple will immediately take advantage of all that extra screen real estate with a new watch face featuring up to eight complications, or widgets, including quick access to communicating with friends and family, which will all be accessible at a quick, squinting glance.

Apple Watch Series 4 pushes the display right to the edges.

Applications have been redesigned to account for the larger display and Apple has also included new customisable watch faces.

The smartwatch features the new Apple S4 SoC which contains a 64-bit dual-core processor and a new GPU, with up to two times faster performance when compared to the Series 3.

The Series 4 also includes a next-generation accelerometer and gyroscope combination, which enables a new feature on the device that allows it to detect when the wearer accidentally falls.

18 hours of battery life.

Apple introduced solid-state buttons to the Apple Watch platform, which were applied to the Digital Crown and the Side button. It delivers an alert and calls emergency services if the user doesn't move for one minute after a fall, Williams said.

The Apple Watch Series 4 has electrodes on its back, allowing the user to take an electrocardiogram.

The Apple Watch Series 4 has a new curved display that is 30 per cent larger than the former versions, with 40mm and 44mm models replacing the previous sizes. And, in case the ease of use isn't enough, the ECG app has been granted clearance by the FDA - the first device of its kind to receive such a distinction. Couple this with the fact that watchOS 5 is the first update not coming to all Apple Watch models, and there are going to be more people looking to buy the new Apple Watch this fall.

The basic model will run $399, while a cellular-compatible version will cost $499 - both will be available September 21.

It's strong, dynamic and colorful and the new Watch faces really add to the mix.

The Series 4 can share heart-rhythm data - which is kept encrypted in the cloud - with physicians, he added. A stainless collection will also be available, alongside a gold stainless finish. It also comes in stainless steel: polished, space black, and gold stainless.

It's good that Apple's managed to retain the form factor while making the screen bigger, and the mix of the fitness and more medically-aimed features will broaden the attraction of owning an Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will start at a $399 for the non-cellular Global Positioning System model, and the cellular-model will start at $499.

The Series 4 will be available for order on September 14 and will hit store shelves on September 21.
