We’re not enemies of the people

We’re not enemies of the people

A bomb threat was reported at the Boston Globe on Thursday, the same day the newspaper spearheaded a campaign to publish coordinated editorials at multiple papers condemning President TrumpDonald John TrumpGillibrand urges opposition to Kavanaugh: Fight for abortion rights "is now or never" Trump claims tariffs on foreign nations will rescue USA steel industry: report Bannon announces pro-Trump movie, operation team ahead of midterms: report MORE's attacks against the press.

Newspapers from ME to Hawaii pushed back against President Donald Trump's attacks on "fake news" with a coordinated series of editorials in defense of a free press on Thursday - and, not surprisingly, Trump didn't take it silently.

He also accused the press of "pushing a political agenda or just plain trying to hurt people".

The initiative was started by The Boston Globe in response to Trump deriding media reports as "fake news" and calling journalists enemies of the people. He's also called media "the enemy of the American people". "Correcting them is core to our job", it said.

According to the Boston Globe, Thursday's participating newspapers are from big and small markets, including in states and counties where Trump won during the 2016 presidential election.

The Fayetteville Observer said it hoped Mr Trump would stop, "but we're not holding our breath".

The San Francisco Chronicle said it would not join the effort because "it plays into Trump's narrative that the media are aligned against him".

The Morning News of Savannah, Georgia, said it was a confidant, not an enemy, to the people.

Since taking office previous year, Trump has repeatedly criticised the press, often referring to certain outlets as "fake news".

Hundreds of USA newspapers are banding together this week to fight back against President Donald Trump's "war on the free press".

The resolution also mentioned quotes from previous USA presidents, including the Founding Fathers, who revered a free and independent press.

"This relentless assault on the free press has unsafe consequences", the Boston Globe wrote.

The Globe's editorial board made the appeal last week, urging newspaper editorial boards to produce opinion pieces about Trump's attacks on the media. Freeman wrote that Trump has the right to free speech as much as his media adversaries. "These attacks on the press are an attack on our nation's foundation".

"The MSM, which loves to criticize Sinclair media when Sinclair has its TV stations carry the same editorial message, collude to act like Sinclair - so long as the message is anti-Trump", Fleischer wrote.

The Baltimore Sun: Employing a measured tone, the newspaper's editorial board revealed they had "mixed emotions" about The Boston Globe's call.
