Wake Forest assistant coach charged with assault in man's death

Wake Forest assistant coach charged with assault in man's death

Jones was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court Thursday evening, and he has been charged with third-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury to another person.

The Daily News and WPIX quoted police officials as saying that Jones punched 35-year-old Sandor Szabo, a Florida resident, in the head during an altercation in the Queens area of Long Island City last Sunday.

Relatives say Szabo tapped on the window of Jones' SUV while searching for his Uber after leaving a family wedding around 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

Wake Forest released a statement.

USA Today reported Jones turned himself in Thursday.

Jones was on Will Wade's staff during the 2015-2016 season before leaving for an assistant coaching job at Central Florida.

Sandor Szabo's employer, What If Media Group, said the man died on Tuesday.

"I can tell you the reason why the charge is what it is now - the reason why it's the appropriate charge - is because the District Attorney's Office and I obtained information that the public does not have", Messena told The Post on Friday morning.

A witness told Associated Press Mr Szabo may have been intoxicated and knocked on a number of auto windows before Jones allegedly hit him. He was ordered to return to court on October 2. He said Jones is cooperating with the police investigation.

The coach's next court appearance is scheduled for October 2, the Queens district attorney's office said. The Jones family sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the Szabo family.

"Sabor Szabo", his family said in a statement.

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post continued. "We are going to miss him dearly".

"He was fun to be with, interesting, and always interested", the company said.
