Venezuela's Maduro Survives Attack by Exploding Drones

Venezuela's Maduro Survives Attack by Exploding Drones

The Venezuelan information minister says the president is fine.

Maduro' speech was cut short during the event on Saturday and soldiers were seen running before the televised transmission was cut off.

In his speech post-attack, Maduro said he saw one flying object explode right in front of him and a split second later, another go off to his right.

Drones loaded with explosives were apparently detonated near a military event in Caracas where Maduro was speaking at a celebration honoring the 81st anniversary of the country's National Guard.

Taking to Twitter after the incident, the country's President said: "I trust the armed force to capture those responsible for the war against the people".

Mr Maduro is expected to address the nation soon.

Maduro was unharmed after an exploding drone "attack".

However, Rodriguez said seven soldiers were injured in what he described as an attempt on Maduro's life.

"We showed that they are vulnerable", the tweet said.

His re-election in May came amid a deep economic crisis which has been driving hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans from the oil-rich country into Colombia.

Maduro was reported safe by government officials.

In the statement to el Nuevo, the group claiming responsibility said the military's goals were not achieved.

The national guard was formed in 1937. One of the key reasons for the protests was the creation of the Constitutional Assembly, which aimed to short-circuit the National Assembly in which the opposition won a supermajority in 2015 elections.

"This was an attempt against the president", Rodriguez said. Although it continues to operate, its decisions are routinely annulled. The government blamed the attack on Colombia and the U.S. state of Florida, which is inhabited by many exiled Venezuelans.

Maduro, who escaped unhurt in the incident, said "everything points" to a right-wing plot against him and also claimed arrests have been made in the case.
