Twitter Reacts: Ohio State's Urban Meyer Under Investigation

Ohio State placed head football coach Urban Meyer on administration leave Wednesday while it investigates claims that he was aware of domestic abuse carried out by one of his assistants but didn't take action.

Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave by Ohio State on Wednesday afternoon following the revelation that Courtney Smith told wives of Ohio State coaches - including Meyer's wife Shelley - that she was abused by Zach.

After Courtney Smith drove the woman home, a fight with her husband ensued and he allegedly grabbed her by the shirt and threw her. Zach Smith was arrested for aggravated battery. Smith was sacked July 23, days after an OH judge issued an order of protection that banned Smith from going within 500 feet of ex-wife Courtney Smith.

McMurphy also obtained a text exchange that Courtney Smith said was with Lindsey Voltolini, whose husband, Brian, has been a member of Meyer's coaching staffs at OSU, Florida, Utah and Bowling Green. Shelley is also an Ohio State employee as a registered nurse. The firing came on the same day the 2009 allegation against Zach Smith was reported, along with police reports detailing two other accusations Courtney Smith made against Zach Smith in the fall of 2015. The season starts September 1 with a game against Oregon State in Columbus. From there he could piggy-back into an National Football League head coaching job.

The university said it will open an investigation into the allegations and offensive coordinator Ryan Day will serve as interim coach in Meyer's absence.

"All the [coaches'] wives knew", Courtney Smith told Brett McMurphy, a college football reporter laid off by ESPN previous year who posted the story on his Facebook page. Smith has never been criminally charged.

Ben Maller thinks that in the likely event that Meyer is out as head coach of Ohio State, he already has a clear path back to the big time. A hearing has been scheduled for Friday. Those messages include pictures of a bruised Courtney Smith. I've never had a conversation about it. The lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss say Ohio State facilitated the abuse by ignoring complaints.
