Trump celebrates John Kelly's first full year as chief of staff

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has told colleagues that he plans to stay on the job through the 2020 election, ending speculation that he was on his way out.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has for now quieted reports that he will exit the administration, staying on as an increasingly diminished sidekick after his early days as a strong right hand to President Donald Trump.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff".

Many of Trump's friends and advisers have concluded the president doesn't really want a chief of staff - and he has several confidants urging him to operate without one.

It was July 28th of past year when Trump announced Kelly would replace Reince Priebus.

The former Marine Corps general succeeded in imposing some changes, such as limiting who could meet with the president, but eventually saw his stature decline as Trump bucked his efforts to implement greater control.

Another senior official told ABC News that the internal conversations about Kelly's future in the administration have been ongoing for several weeks and that the president and Kelly came to the agreement as previous tensions lessened.

John Roberts now serves as the chief White House correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC).

"We didn't cover ourselves in glory", Kelly told a gathering of reporters last March.

The image belied a fraught relationship between Trump and Kelly, who has been credited with restoring a semblance of order to the chaotic West Wing - but at the cost of grating on the freewheeling commander-in-chief. Mr. Trump tweeted Monday.

If Kelly stays on into 2019, he'll occupy the role during a re-election cycle, which is likely to downsize what already is a weakened role for him. He has said he spends as much as eight hours a day with Trump. "He's a wonderful man", Mr. Trump added at the time.
