Second mosquito pool tests positive for West Nile virus

Second mosquito pool tests positive for West Nile virus

The first West Nile virus-related death of the year in Dallas County has been reported, the county health department confirmed to WFAA on Tuesday.

Anton Sattler, with Bismarck Burleigh Public Health, says they set an all-time record for mosquito trap counts with 16,776 reported in mid-July.

"Over the past few weeks, West Nile virus activity has been on the rise across Ontario", Lyttle said in a release. In North America, that means that mosquito season - extending from the late spring through the fall - is West Nile season.

West Nile virus is a disease that is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

Symptoms usually develop between two and 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. They can be infected when they feed on the blood of infected birds.

Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing.

Use insect repellent containing DEET when outside.

Minimize time spent outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Health officials note that even a container as small as a bottle cap can become a mosquito breeding ground, so residents should take to eliminate standing water.
