Scott Morrison to replace Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull after party vote

Scott Morrison to replace Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull after party vote

Friday's ballot among Liberal Party lawmakers means Australia's sixth change of prime minister in 11 years, prolonging an era of extraordinary political instability.

Incoming Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison (R) walks next to his new deputy Josh Frydenberg after a party meeting in Canberra, Australia August 24, 2018.

He will not contest the subsequent ballot if - as anticipated - the spill is carried, Turnbull announced to a lunchtime Thursday news conference.

"I've had a lot of very angry constituents who believe that they had a right to decide who was the prime minister", he told the ABC. "The work of government continues".

"I was impressed by how many of my colleagues spoke or voted for loyalty above disployalty, how the insurgents were not rewarded", he said.

The political civil war shocked business and industry that want crucial energy and tax policy reforms finalized. It's also an global embarrassment for a nation that prides itself as a safe and stable democracy in which to invest. Turnbull did not stand for election in the vote and said he will resign from Parliament "not before too long".

Other favorites include Treasurer Scott Morrison and the only declared challenger Peter Dutton, a former cabinet minister.

"Until we have generational change inside politics and the next generation of politicians come through ..."

SCOTT Morrison, or ScoMo, as he is often called, has been a leader-in-waiting for years.

"We intend to be governing ... so I don't think anybody should be making any plans for any elections any time soon", Morrison said.

An immediate retirement would trigger a by-election in the NSW seat of Wentworth.

On a well patronized message board on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation website, a respondent identifying herself as Alana C. wrote: "Call an election and let's be done with the bulls (asterisk)(asterisk)(asterisk)".

Mr Turnbull had demanded the names of his party's politicians who wanted him to go before allowing the meeting at Parliament House in Canberra.

"It is a great privilege to serve in this important position, and our job is to deliver lower taxes, more jobs, and to grow the Australian economy to create better standards of living for all Australians".

Turnbull said he asked Australia's most senior legal officer to provide advice on Dutton's eligibility.

Just hours ahead of a potential vote, Turnbull's letter threshold had still not been met, though key Dutton supporters said they were confident the meeting will happen.

Dutton's failure prevents Australian policy from shifting to the hard right, although there has been little policy discussion in the leadership struggle.

"Our job.as we take forward this mantle of leadership as a new generation, is to ensure that we not only bring our party back together, which has been bruised and battered this week, but that. we bring the parliament back together", Morrison said in his first appearance after his party-room victory.

She said she imagines Mr Morrison will be going to the upcoming Pacific Island Forum in Nauru as well. Relations between Trump and Turnbull started badly in February 2017 when Trump berated the Australian leader over a bilateral refugee agreement before abruptly ending their telephone conversation, according to a leaked transcript of the call.

Turnbull is the fourth prime minister — from both the conservative Liberal Party and more leftist Labor Party — to be dumped by his or her own party before serving a full three-year term since this modern trend of leader-swapping began in 2010. Analysts expect the polling to worsen due to the clumsy and bungled way the leadership was challenged.
