On Anniversary of Heather Heyer’s Death, Her Mother Reflects on Her Loss

White supremacist Jason Kessler arrives at the Vienna metro station to travel to Washington on the first anniversary of their rally in Charlottesville.

Hawk Newsome, the president of that Black Lives Matter chapter, told NPR last week that if people are "tired of the racism in America, if they're exhausted of these groups who have killed people for hundreds of years, then they should show up and stand with us in this safe space on Sunday". Concrete barriers and metal fences had been erected, and police searched bags at two checkpoints.

John Walsh, 43, said he traveled from Boston to help ensure that counterprotesters overwhelmingly outnumbered white supremacists.

On a quick tour through what Susan Bro calls the "international headquarters", you'll see signs of remembrance of Heather Heyer from all over the world. A makeshift memorial adorned with flowers was created on a sidewalk close to where Heyer was struck.

Bro said there's still "so much healing to do". She said her daughter would be saying "focus on the issues, quit looking at me and focus on the issues".

A year ago, countless people were injured protesting white supremacy and Neo-Naziism in Charlottesville and and one person, Heather Heyer, was killed.

The day's death toll rose to three when a state police helicopter that had been monitoring the event and assisting with the governor's motorcade crashed, killing two troopers.

The "Unite the Right" rally is scheduled for Sunday in Lafayette Park, just across from the White House.

A counterprotest organizer, speaking from the stage, said: "We will be here until these fascist forces are gone, however long that takes". Carlson, 22, said she feared for her life when she and a group of her friends were surrounded by the phalanx of young white men at the statue. The rally marked the one-year anniversary of the Unite the Right rally which resulted in heavy clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters.

The group made its way to downtown before dispersing. Some marchers linked arms as they walked.

A review by a former US attorney found a lack of coordination between state and city police and an operational plan that elevated officer safety over public safety. Our streets" and "Who do you protect? A group raised a banner that said: "Last year they came w/ torches".

"Out of this frightful tragedy, we've seen a community that was able to come together to say this is not who we are".

The violence culminated when a man plowed his auto into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing a woman named Heather Heyer and injuring 19.

The white nationalist who organized the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville will hold a similar event this weekend.

The organizer expects a maximum of 400 attendees, according to the permit application.

Democratic U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said Trump was not doing enough to disavow racists. "There is no city better equipped to handle large-scale events, including First Amendment events, than Washington D.C.", Police Chief Peter Newsham told reporters.
