No talks but no war either says Iran's Khamenei

In an August 13 speech, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed a wide range of issues pertaining to his country, from the economic problems and the currency's collapse to the possibility of negotiations with the United States and a military confrontation between the two countries.

"Beside sanctions, they are talking about war and negotiations. let me say a few words to the people: THERE WILL BE NO WAR, NOR WILL WE NEGOTIATE WITH THE U.S.", Khamenei said via his official Twitter account in English. The Times of Israel notes Khamenei's outline on his English Twitter account as to why negotiations are out of the question, in which he calls the United States government a "duplicitous" one that uses a bait-and-switch-style "formula" during talks.

The sanctions target Iran's trade in gold and other precious metals, its purchases of USA dollars and its auto industry.

Khamenei added that "negotiations with the USA would definitely harm us and they are forbidden".

He noted that negotiation with the current US administration is impossible.

Regarding his planned visit on October 25-26 to Turkey to boost bilateral economic ties, accompanied by a 80-member business delegation of leading companies, Altmaier said: "I represent the interests of more than 7,000 German companies operating in Turkey".

"Negotiating the nuclear agreement was a miscalculation, and I personally made a mistake in these negotiations", Khamenei said.

"With better management and more efficient planning we can resist the sanctions and overcome them", Khamenei said, in an apparent effort to deflect public anger over the deteriorating economy toward Rouhani's government.

European signatories still back the nuclear deal.

The Trump administration renewed sanctions on Iran last week and the Iranian currency quickly plummeted.

The central bank and the judiciary have blamed "enemies" for the fall of the currency and a rapid rise in the price of gold coins, and the judiciary has said more than 40 people including a former central bank deputy have been arrested on charges carrying the death penalty.

"It is not that the sanctions do not play a role; but a major part of the situation is the result of [government's own] actions", Khamenei said, according to Irna, as he was addressing thousands of Iranians in Tehran on Monday. He also said some of the "red-lines" that Iran had designated in the nuclear deal were crossed, but did not specify which ones. Iran is believed to have long-range missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometres, which are capable of reaching USA bases in the region and Israel.

He did not discuss the range of the missile, but older versions like the Fateh-313 have a range of some 500 kilometres.

Iran often announces military achievements that can not be independently verified.
