Mueller’s Russian Federation probe makes ‘Joseph McCarthy look like a baby!’

Mueller’s Russian Federation probe makes ‘Joseph McCarthy look like a baby!’

"President Trump, through counsel, declined to assert any privilege over Mr. McGahn's testimony, so Mr. McGahn answered the Special Counsel team's questions fulsomely and honestly, as any person interviewed by federal investigators must", McGahn's personal attorney, William Burck, said.

Trump also continued to complain about the Mueller probe Sunday, calling the investigation - which has so far resulted in more than 30 indictments and guilty pleas - a "rigged witch hunt" and claiming there was "no collusion and no obstruction".

McGahn reportedly has told investigators what he knew about the president's role in the firing of former FBI director James Comey, Trump's repeated criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his role in the Russian Federation investigation before the president hired outside counsel to deal with the matter, The Times reported, citing a dozen anonymous sources. "Witch Hunt!" Trump wrote on Twitter after the release of the report.

Trump also Sunday compared the investigation to McCarthyism.

In trying to make his argument with Meet the Press host Chuck Todd, Giuliani said "Truth isn't truth", to which Todd replied: "This is going to become a bad meme".

"Also, it doesn't risk anything for the president, because the president can't be charged with anything based on what the counsel says", Dershowitz said.

"All of the resignations and corruption, yet heavily conflicted Bob Mueller refuses to even look in that direction", Trump wrote.

Repeating a spelling mistake made in his initial response on Saturday, when the report was published online, Trump wrote: "The failing [New York Times] wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Councel [sic] Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Councel [sic], he must be a John Dean type 'RAT'".

However, McGahn ultimately told investigators that he never saw Trump "go beyond his legal authorities".

The thesis of the New York Times story is that Mr. McGahn cooperated in a way that could hurt Donald Trump in order to protect himself and because he doesn't trust the President. The person also said Trump is not anxious because he does not feel he did anything wrong.

One lawyer familiar with the matter said Mr. McGahn could have been subpoenaed to testify to the grand jury if he did not cooperate with Mr. Mueller voluntarily and might have lost legal battles if he tried to invoke executive privilege.

Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani told CNN that McGahn was sanctioned to cooperate in the investigation and encouraged to do so by John Dowd, who was Trump's lead private attorney at the time. He added about the Times report, "We think it was leaked to get the President to testify - that he would get angry at (McGahn) the way he did at Omarosa - and would want to testify".

It was the first time the president has equated the investigation to McCarthyism on Twitter.
