John McCain death: President Trump and Barack Obama share their condolences

Sen. John McCain's wife, Cindy McCain, and daughter, Meghan McCain, released poignant statements of thanks and remembrances Saturday evening just after it was announced that the Arizona Republican, 81, had passed away at his home in Arizona. Fact is. he had surpassed expectations for survival. "But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict". "They can not be degraded and demeaned in that fashion", he said.

President Donald Trump extended his "deepest sympathies and respect".

"No ma'am", McCain said, taking the microphone from her.

"I understand the discipline and the things that go along about being a service person and protecting our freedoms", Edwards said.

Graham said that he would "need time to absorb this" but that the McCain's family "are in my prayers".

McCain's condition worsened last fall, and he has been in Arizona since December.

On July 25, 2017, McCain delivered a Senate floor speech not long after his cancer diagnosis that was widely seen as his farewell address.

Known as a "maverick" by some, the senator was often at odds with his own party. He had a reputation for speaking his mind and had also earned US President Donald Trump's ire for voting against the Republican-led effort to repeal Obamacare a year ago.

The secretary of defence said the USA had "lost a man who steadfastly represented the best ideals of our country".

Obama writes that they "saw this country as a place where anything is possible - and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way". "Even in times of political turmoil such as these, we share that awesome heritage and the responsibility to embrace it".

Last month, he blasted Trump for the president's chummy summit in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Senator John McCain was a humble hero and an American patriot.

He frequently criticized other Trump administration policies, including the decision to prosecute all those who illegally crossed the border to enter the USA - a policy which resulted in children being separated from their parents at the border.

Obama also recognized McCain's heroism, urging Americans to follow his example. He was praised by the political establishment for his pathfinding work to overhaul the campaign system but criticized for the sloppiness of his preparation in selecting Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate.

At issue was a pair of 1987 meetings between McCain, four other senators and regulators to get the government to back off a key campaign donor.

It was McCain's second run at the presidency; he lost the GOP nomination to Bush in 2000.

The son and grandson of Navy admirals, McCain was a former Navy pilot.

John was born on August 29, 1936, in the Coco Solo Naval Air Station within the Panama Canal Zone, which at the time was a U.S. territory.

"John was many things - a proud graduate of the Naval Academy, a Senate colleague, a political opponent". When his plane was shot down, he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war. McCain deployed his parachute and plunged into a lake, breaking his leg and both arms.

Most recently, he was a thorn in the side of President Donald Trump, keeping up his criticism of the White House even while undergoing severe medical treatment in Arizona. Most of the time, he was in solitary confinement.

McCain walks inside the Hoa Lo prison, nicknamed "the Hanoi Hilton", in Vietnam, where McCain was kept as a prisoner of war from October 1967 until March 1973.

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, of California, said that McCain "was a true American hero" who "was a lion of the Senate".

He retired in 1981 as a captain, after receiving numerous decorations including the Silver Star, two Bronze Star medals, two Purple Hearts and a Prisoner of War commendation.

According to McCain's website, he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982 before being elected to the United States Senate in 1986. Due to election deadlines, it is unlikely that there will be also an election for McCain's seat in 2018 - which means Ducey's appointment could serve through 2020.
