Charlotte Rae dies at 92

Garrett on "The Facts of Life" and "Diff'rent Strokes" - died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles, according to her publicist.

At the time she said: "Last Monday, I found out I have bone cancer".

Rae beat pancreatic cancer around 2010 and was diagnosed with bone cancer seven years later.

With her son, Larry, Rae wrote an autobiography entitled, "The Fact of My Life", and in 2016, noted she had remained close with many of her co-stars.

In 1982 she was nominated for an Emmy Award for best supporting actress in a comedy.

Rae gained fame on TV but she made her name as a thespian in the 1950s in such stage in roles ranging from "The Threepenny Opera" to "Li'l Abner".

She went on to say, "So now, at the age of 91, I have to make up my mind".

"When I walk down the street or I'm in the market or I'm in my auto and there's a truck driver next to me and they give me the thumbs-up sign and they say, 'We love you, ' it's so lovely".

Tributes have already poured in for Rae, including messages from former co-stars like The Facts of Life's Kim Fields and Mindy Cohn and Diff'rent Strokes' Todd Bridges.

Comedians Kathy Griffin and Gilbert Gottfried, as well as Broadway star Audra McDonald, also paid their respects via social media.

Her character's popularity paved the way for the creation of "The Facts of Life" in which she offered motherly guidance to the young characters at an all-girl boarding school. "Nobody ever knew", she said in a statement at the time. Bridges's poignant post noted that he is the last surviving cast member of the popular '70s and '80s sitcom, following the deaths of Dana Plato, Conrad Bain, Gary Coleman, and now Rae. She played "the Twitch" and other iconic comic television roles on the Phil Silver's Show and created the role of Sylvia Schnauzer on TV's classic, vehicle 54 Where Are You?

The actress released a memoir in 2015 called "The Facts of My Life" in which she recounted the challenges faced by her family.

Rae was a survivor - after losing her mother and her sister to pancreatic cancer, she opted to be screened early and beat cancer. Her marriage to music composer John Strauss produced two sons but ended in divorce after he revealed his bisexuality.
