Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull on leadership contest

Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull on leadership contest

The fallout of his failed leadership challenge against Malcolm Turnbull was all anyone in Australia was talking about on Tuesday.

Mr Dutton revealed an implied criticism of Mr Turnbull hidden while he was a minister: "I will make sure that I can do all I can to make certain that the Coalition wins the next election and that Bill Shorten never ever becomes Prime Minister". Immediately, pending other arrangements, Scott Morrison will act as Home Affairs Minister.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott - the man knocked off in a leadership challenge by Mr Turnbull - has been the most vocal critic of the energy policy.

"The problem is that Bill Shorten would be a disastrous prime minister of this country and I believe I had the best prospect of leading the Liberal party to success at the next election".

Polling and growing dissatisfaction with Turnbull's fractured centre-right government, led by his Liberal Party, suggest all Labor has to do before the next election, which could be as soon as next month or as late as May, is avoid shooting themselves in the foot.

What do you think of today's leadership spill?

"If we are fighting amongst ourselves, guess what, when the voters go to the election, they'll mark us down as they should", Mr Laundy said.

A stymied effort to cut corporate taxes, a citizenship crisis that cost a number of lawmakers their seats, and his perceived arrogance as the so-called "Mr. Harborside Mansion" of Sydney have all weighed on Turnbull's popularity with voters.

Asked if he'd lost confidence in Turnbull's leadership, Abbott on Monday called for an energy policy the government could take to the election and win.

"What we're doing is focused on price", Mr Turnbull told reporters in central western NSW.

Dutton refused to rule out another tilt at the top job, saying he made his move in the belief that he had the best chance of steering the party to an election victory.

Dutton, a former policeman from Queensland state, can now canvass support from the backbench to mount a potential fresh challenge.

"Disunity undermines the ability of any government to get things done".

Today Defence Minsiter Chris Pyne told ABC radio Mr Turnbull's announcements on energy policy would leave his colleagues "extremely impressed with the direction the government is taking". "He's a member of our team, he's given me his absolute support".

The leadership talk was fueled by an Ipsos poll published in Fairfax newspapers, which showed support for Turnbull's Liberal-National coalition falling four points to 45 percent, 10 points behind opposition party Labor and enough for a crushing electoral defeat.

"Unity is critical. We can not allow, as I said in the party room today, our internal issues to undermine our work, to create a risk, a real risk, that Bill Shorten will be the prime minister".

Mr Turnbull thanked his colleagues after the votes, Ms Marino said.

"The decline. may reflect the impact of the messy political debate locally and the associated slump in support for the current Turnbull government", said ANZ Head of Australian Economics David Plank.

His position remains in jeopardy despite surviving Dutton's challenge, stoking expectations of further political instability in a country that has seen six different leaders since 2009.

Mr Shorten has written to the prime minister asking that all major decisions be paused until the leadership question is resolved.
