2 suspects arrested over US Embassy shooting in Ankara

2 suspects arrested over US Embassy shooting in Ankara

Shots were fired at the U.S. Embassy in Turkey early Monday, striking a security booth outside the compound in the capital of Ankara, Turkish media reported.

The embassy is closed for a holiday and no one was hurt.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Turkey thanked the Turkish police and government for its efforts in nabbing the suspects.

Ankara Governor's Office named the suspects as Ahmet Celikten and Osman Gundas; the 9mm pistol and vehicle used in the shooting incident were also seized.

Evangelical pastor Andrew Craig Brunson -currently under house arrest after more than 1½ years in prison- is facing up to 35 years in prison if convicted of espionage and terror-related charges.

There were no injuries, but a window in a security cabin was reportedly hit.

Embassy spokesman David Gainer said: "We can confirm a security incident took place at the U.S. Embassy early this morning".

A top official in Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party said the attack was a "clear provocation" and that foreign diplomats are guests of the country.

Tensions between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have been rocked amid Turkey's detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson, who is accused by the country of backing a coup attempt against Mr Erdogan in 2016. "Turkey is a safe country and all foreign missions are under protection", tweeted presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin.

US President Donald Trump has doubled the tariffs on aluminium and steel tariffs from Turkey, prompting Ankara to sharply hike tariffs on several US products.

Turkey's currency bounced back 7% last week after Turkey slapped huge tariffs on American cars, alcohol, and tobacco.

The diplomatic stand-off sent the Turkish currency into free fall against dollar, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowing to emerge victorious out of the crisis. In a televised Eid address, Erdogan likened it to an attack on the Muslim call to prayer and the Turkish flag, saying, "The goal is to bring Turkey and the Turkish people to their knees".

At least one suspect was wounded in a shooting outside the USA consulate in Istanbul in 2015.
