Uber suspends driver after he secretly livestreamed his passengers

Mr Gargac worked as a part-time Uber and Lyft driver in the St Louis area of Missouri, USA.

Uber has suspended a driver after he secretly livestreamed his passengers' journeys on video-sharing website Twitch. Passengers' personal details, like first names and occasionally last, were regularly revealed on-air to a shadowy audience of around 4,500 followers and some 100 paying subscribers.

In a statement to ABC News America, Uber and Lyft said "the troubling behaviour in our videos is not in line with our ommunity guidelines".

"I try to capture the natural interactions between myself and the passengers - what a Lyft and Uber ride actually is", he said.

Lyft said in a statement to The Washington Post that "the safety and comfort of the Lyft community is our top priority, and we have deactivated this driver".

The St. Louis Dispatch says passengers can be seen vomiting, gossiping, kissing, and having general small talk all without knowing they were being live-streamed.

"I've had a few offline conversations with some folks, and they suggested getting rid of the stored vods as step #1 of trying to calm everyone down", he said, referring to on-demand videos on Twitch. He asked a Post-Dispatch reporter to not use his full name in the story, to protect his privacy.




An Uber driver has been suspended after it emerged that he had been broadcasting his passengers' conversations live without their consent. Missouri law only requires one party to know about a recording - and allows recording where persons would have no reasonable expectations of privacy. "It was fake. It felt produced", the driver said. He said victims could theoretically sue for invasion of privacy, but "would need to show that the back of an Uber is a place where we can and should be expected to be private".

Klieman says in a one-party consent state that makes it legal to disseminate and even monetize secret recordings of people.

"But the law itself is going to extend to all kinds of recording right now and it hasn't been clarified since livestreaming technology has popped up".

Gargac's live stream channel was also removed from Twitch.

The incident is stirring up debate over video cameras inside ride-hailing auto services. This month a man suspected of being the "ride-share rapist", who posed as an Uber driver in...

The Twitch spokesman said the company does not comment on specific cases.
