Thailand Cave Rescue: 8th Boy Emerges on Second Day of Dangerous Mission

Billionaire Elon Musk and his team of engineers have developed a rescue pod that may be able to help rescue the Thai boys and their football coach, trapped in a cave in Thailand. The boys brought out of the dark, winding cave on Monday are "safe and conscious", said Chiang Rai province acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is in charge of the rescue effort.

The boys and their coach had been stranded in Tham Luang Nang Non since June 23 when they went exploring in the cave after a scrimmage.

British divers found the 13, huddled on a muddy bank in a partly flooded chamber several kilometres inside the complex, on Monday last week.

The head of the Thai rescue operation told reporters that the mission Monday went smoothly, and has asked for three more days to rescue the remaining four boys and their coach from the Tham Luang caves.

He said the next phase of the operation will resume in between 10 and 20 hours - probably late Monday morning or afternoon - as rescuers have to replaced empty compressed air tanks and perform other maintenance on the rescue system.

Rescue operation commander Narongsak Osottanakorn declined to say how many people would be taken out on Monday, but a Thai navy source said it was likely to be four or five.

Authorities said a medical team was assessing whether to reunite the boys with their parents soon.

There are now five members of the Wild Boar football team now left in the cave.

The first kilometer is the hardest, CNN explains, as that's where the children have to navigate a narrow flooded channel.

Rescuers need to hold the boys' oxygen tanks in front of them and swim pencil-like through submerged holes.

Four boys were extracted Monday, the Royal Thai Navy confirmed. Heavy rains struck the area and parts of their path back to the cave entrance became swollen with floodwaters.

Osotthanakorn said the boys were hungry and asking for a Thai dish of beef with basil and chilli. Two of them possibly have a lung infection but all eight are generally "healthy and smiling", he said.

"Living in a cave has a different environment, which might contain animals that could transmit any disease", they said. Two more were taken from the cave before nightfall.

"Visitors will only be allowed to meet and talk to the patients", he said.

The names of the rescued boys were not released. The device could be used to rescue one boy at a time as it has space to fit in one person with his arms crossed, he said. Previously, round trips through the cave network would take about 11 hours.

Earlier Monday, Narongsak said the four rescued the day before were in good spirits.

Another four boys were taken out on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance. Onlookers were seen watching and cheering as they drove by.

An ambulance leaves the cave in northern Thailand hours after the operation began to rescue the trapped soccer players and their coach.

But the death of a former Thai Navy SEAL diver who ran out of oxygen in the cave on Friday underscored the danger of the journey.

Their escape led to an explosion of jubilation on social media in Thailand as the rescued boys were rushed to hospital. So the sub still could come into play on a third day of rescues.
