Thai cave rescue: Entire teen soccer team, coach found alive

Thai cave rescue: Entire teen soccer team, coach found alive

All twelve boys and their coach who were missing for nine days after being trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand have been found alive, a regional governor said. "But they're all alive", he added.

Detective Superintendent Thomas Hester said the AFP Specialist Response Group team, which arrived in Chiang Rai on Saturday night Thailand time, faced "incredibly challenging" conditions.

Narongsak explained early Monday that fixing rope lines and deploying oxygen tanks along their route will allow the divers to operate.

Efforts to locate the team in the network were complicated by rising water levels, which continued as the rain did not abate.

"We will prepare to send additional food to be sustained for at least four months and train all 13 to dive while continuing to drain the water", Navy Captain Anand Surawan said, according to a statement from Thailand's Armed Forces. Many people are coming.

Divers found the group about 300-400 meters (yards) past a section of the cave on higher ground that was thought to be where they might have taken shelter.

The team, consisting of boys ages 11-16 and their coach, had stopped by Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non Cave near the Thai border with Myanmar, after a practice. In the video, the dazed boys appear to be unaware of how long they had been trapped deep underground when they asked the divers what day it was. "In these 10 days, how many million seconds have there been? We lack special skills and unique equipment for cave searches", Pipob said Tuesday.

Rescue divers spent much of today making preparations for what ended up being the final push in their search in the cave in northern Thailand.

As the days wore on with the group missing, distraught family members had placed fruit, desserts, sugary drinks and candies on mats near the cave as an offering to the spirits which some people believe protect the cave and the forest.

"We worked so hard to find them and we will not lose them", he said. They were located near a chamber known as Pattaya Beach, which has a higher elevation.

"We found all 13 safe. we will take care of them until they can move", Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters, who broke into spontaneous applause and cheering.

So far we just found them. Other efforts have focused on finding shafts on the mountainside that might serve as a back door to the blocked-off areas.

One of the rescuer workers also said none of the boys know how to swim.

If diving proves impossible, there is an outside chance they can be drilled out or wait for waters to recede and walk out on foot. The reference to four months most likely means authorities are considering waiting until the rainy season ends in October to begin the rescue. Many, many people. We're the first.

Emergency packages have been dropped into cave shafts containing food, beverages, a phone, a flashlight, candles, a lighter and a map of the cave, in the hope the boys will be able to find them.

Australian police and military personnel were deployed Saturday to join other multinational teams, including USA military personnel and experts from a British cave exploration club.
