Serena Williams reaches 10th Wimbledon final with straight sets win

Serena Williams reaches 10th Wimbledon final with straight sets win

Serena Williams may have been expecting to take "baby steps" ahead of her return to the sport after pregnancy, but the comeback queen remains firmly on course to make one giant leap forward and secure an extraordinary eighth Wimbledon Championships title. Ostapenko, who has a volatile game, finally broke Kerber's serve in the second set, but by that point she was already down 1-5 and it wasn't enough.

"For me, having to deal with PEs is more mentally challenging because if I have a pain in my leg, I automatically go to the worst-case scenario", she said. Rumors have been circling for weeks that the new Duchess of Sussex would attend Wimbledon to cheer on her good friend, tennis legend Serena Williams.

Serena Williams will face 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber, on Saturday.

After last week's "Seedageddon", which had robbed the tournament of all of its top-10 seeds, order was restored in the latter stages of the tournament, with three former grand slam winners advancing to the last four.

Jul 12, 2018; London, United Kingdom; Serena Williams (USA) in action during her match against Julia Goerges (GER) on day 10 at All England Lawn and Croquet Club. It is timed for release as the anticipation crests with Roger as returning champion, 10 years after their famed 2008 Wimbledon championship - an epic match so close and so reflective of their competitive balance that, in the end, the true victor was the sport itself.

In addition to the issues relating to her health, Williams has also had to deal with being away from her daughter at such a precious moment in her child's development.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with the only brief wobble coming in the ninth game when Williams was broken. Serena also won in straight sets over Julia Goerges, where she racked up five aces and converted 87% of her first serve points.

Having just made four unforced errors in the first set, Williams continued to impose herself on Goerges in the second as she stood close to the baseline to get the first strike in.

They've played each other a total of eight times in the past, and Williams leads 6-2. She has seven titles at the All England Club.

The 11th seed saved a break point in game six before breaking the Latvian's serve in the next game.

"It wasn't as tight as I was used to", she said last month. By the end, Ostapenko had far more winners, 30-10, and far more unforced errors, 36-7. "I think grass is [Kerber's] best surface". Hingis would never win another major singles title, which isn't all that unusual in a sport that has seen plenty of youngsters who rise quickly and then fade nearly as fast.

In only her fourth tournament since the birth of her daughter Olympia in September, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is closing in on her first major title as a mother.

Williams explained that Markle's come to support her during Wimbledon over the past couple of years and now, her role and position has changed, but that their friendship remains very much the same.

Since hiring coach Wim Fissette - formerly with Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep and Victoria Azarenka - at the start of the year, Kerber's trajectory has been upward again.

"I see a champion", Kerber said, "that's for sure".
