Rescue Operation To Save The Thai Football Team Is Underway

Rescue Operation To Save The Thai Football Team Is Underway

The 12 young boys and their soccer coach have been trapped more than two miles into a cave in Thailand for over two weeks when monsoon rains drove them back into their location.

The ongoing rescue could take two to four days in all depending on conditions, according to the Associated Press.

Without going into detail about the rescue, he said that "hundreds of people have vetted" the plan to bring the boys to safety, although "there will always be margins for error". A defence ministry official earlier told AFP six boys had "come out".

The rescue started at 10 am Thai time and involved 13 global divers and five Thai navy seals, who were described by Governor Narongsak as "an all-star team", reports the Daily Mail.

Four members of a youth soccer team trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand were rescued Sunday by a group of 13 specialist divers and five Thai Navy SEALs.

"Today is the D-day".

Narongsak Osottanakorn, who is in charge of the rescue mission, said Saturday conditions were now "perfect", BBC News reports.

The boys, aged between 11 and 16, went missing with the 25-year-old after soccer practice on June 23 after they set out to explore the Tham Luang cave complex in a forest park near by the border with Myanmar.

"Today we are at peak readiness", the lead rescuer said as he announced the start of the operation. "So we took him to the hospital", Yookongkaew said, adding that the operation will keep going. In one, Pheerapat, nicknamed "Night", whose 16th birthday the group were celebrating in the cave when they became stuck on June 23, said: "I love you, Dad, Mum and my sister".

Thirteen medical teams were stationed outside the cave - each with its own helicopter and ambulance - one for each of 12 boys and their coach. The pause will give divers time to prepare gear, including masks and refilling air tanks, for the next round of rescue efforts.

Water levels have dropped significantly in the cave, so the boys will be able to walk out for part of the way before they have to make a treacherous dive in dark and muddy waters out of the narrow cave passageways, officials said. Thai authorities are calling it a war against the water.

Meanwhile, efforts are on to save the children from the caverns as rain water has filled the rescue route.
