Prosecutors have a dozen recordings made by former Trump attorney Michael Cohen

Prosecutors have a dozen recordings made by former Trump attorney Michael Cohen

Prosecutors want to know whether that violated federal campaign finance laws, and any conversation with Trump about those payments would be of keen interest to them.

Michael Avenatti, a lawyer for porn star Stormy Daniels, said on ABC News' "This Week" on Sunday that there is more than just a single taped conversation between Trump and Cohen.

Federal prosecutors received a dozen audio recordings seized in April from President Donald Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, according to a court filing made public Monday.

The recordings were given to the government at the weekend, Barbara Jones, the retired judge and so-called special master overseeing the review, said in her one-page order. "As I noted before, the tapes will speak for themselves - spin can't change facts", he said. Avenatti has been a nuisance for Cohen throughout his legal representation for Stormy Daniels, but he recently encountered Cohen and held an "extremely productive" chat with him a NY restaurant.

The FBI seized the recording as part of an investigation which stemmed in part from a referral by the United States special counsel's office, which is looking into possible coordination during the election campaign between Trump's aides and Russian officials.

It has been three days since news broke that U.S. President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen secretly recorded their conversation about a possible payout to a former Playboy model over the story of her affair with Trump.

"This is not the only tape", Avenatti said. The tape was recorded when he was candidate Trump. He also asserted, without elaborating, in post: "The good news is that your favorite President did nothing wrong!" McDougal sold her story as an exclusive to the National Enquirer in August, 2016 for $150,000, though the tabloid never published her story - effectively buying her silence.

"Nothing in that conversation suggests that he had any knowledge of it in advance", he told The New York Times, which originally disclosed the recording Friday.

Cohen, Trump's longtime personal attorney, taped and stored conversations with his associates and has argued that the seized recordings and documents are protected under attorney-client privilege.

Lawyer Rudy Giuliani said no campaign funding was involved in the discussion between Trump and Cohen, who has distanced himself from Trump in recent months as the FBI investigates Cohen's business dealings.

Giuliani has said no campaign funding was involved in the discussion between Trump and Cohen.

"Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer's office (early in the morning) - nearly unheard of", Trump tweeted.

"Even more inconceivable that a lawyer would tape a client - totally unheard of perhaps illegal".

A representative for McDougal has not responded to requests for comment.

The Enquirer is owned by American Media Inc ― whose CEO, David Pecker, is a friend of Trump's. Since then, however, he has sought distance from his former attorney, who said in an interview earlier this month that his "first loyalty" belongs to his family and his country, not the president.
