President Trump issues stern warning to the president of Iran

Also on Sunday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo compared the Iranian government to the "mafia".

Trump tweeted Sunday that if Iran threatened the U.S.it would "SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE".

USA officials confirm upcoming statements against Iran will portray them in a harsh light, and may be "exaggerated" or even contradict previous statements.

Trump has a history of firing off heated tweets that seem to quickly escalate long-standing disputes with leaders of nations at odds with the U.S.

Iran has rejected talks with the USA, and Rouhani has accused the US of stoking an "economic war".

"Trump's statements against Iran are psychological warfare".

She says: "The president consults with his national security team on a daily basis".

And Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, the 2016 Democratic vice-presidential candidate, called the Twitter blast from the White House "another warning sign that Trump is blundering toward war with Iran".

Sanders said on Monday that Trump has been "very clear about what he's not going to allow to take place".

He added, however, the war of words between the two presidents was to be expected, since official diplomatic relations between the two countries have been frozen for decades.

"If this happened, this would be considered as a gift for Iran as a response for the US sanctions imposed by the US President Donald Trump on Iranian oil exports". Pompeo referred to Iran as a "kleptocratic regime" that had been stealing from the Iranian public for 40 years.

Wazne, the director of American Strategic Studies institute in Beirut, warned that "it needs just one mistake to have a major regional war".

"As I have previously said, we can not trust in the words of the United States and even in their signature, so negotiations with the United States are useless", Khamenei told a gathering of Iranian diplomats in Tehran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Mr Trump for his "strong stance" on Iran. Rouhani cautioned Trump to stop "playing with the lion's tail or else you will regret it".

Trump in May withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, which eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for restraints on its nuclear weapons program.

Prominent Iranian political analyst Seed Leilaz downplayed the war of words, saying it was in his opinion "the storm before the calm".

US President Donald Trump is unlikely to get the boot from Twitter even after threatening Iran with dire consequences as the microblogging site sees the world leaders with a different lens.

Within hours, Iran's state-owned news agency IRNA dismissed the tweet, describing it as a "passive reaction" to Rouhani's remarks.

Rouhani's comments came during a speech delivered in front of diplomats in the Iranian capital.

Asked by a reporter Monday afternoon if he had any worries about provoking tensions with Iran, Trump said "none at all" as he toured the Made in America exhibition on the White House South Lawn.

"The US seeks the return of the situation and their status before the (1979 Islamic) revolution in Iran", said Khamenei.
