Ko surges into contention with strong second round at KPMG

After Hataoka was eliminated in the first playoff hole, Park beat Ryu with a birdie to take home about 610 million won in prize money. "Hopefully tomorrow I can just go out and put a good score together and just kind of see what happens", said Henderson, who will play in a group on Sunday with Ryu and Park.

Park started the final round trailing Ryu by four strokes at seven-under, and didn't make a bogey over 20 holes on Sunday. She hugged Ryu. She wiped away the tears. "That's what really made me cry".

The Smiths Falls, Ont. native showed some frustration on the 11th hole of Kemper Lakes Golf Club, breaking her club after missing a wedge shot, on her way to finishing tied for sixth at the Women's PGA Championship.

Yet after a hard year, it was Park's day.

But after carding the low round of the week, Hataoka fell on the first of two playoff holes, both of which Park birdied to win her second major following the South Korean's victory at the U.S. Women's Open past year. Park also shared the Player of the Year honors with Ryu, becoming the first rookie since Nancy Lopez in 1979 to win these three individual titles. Park In-bee, the world No.1 in the women's world ranking, missed the cut after shooting five over par in the first two rounds.

Ryu ended a almost year-long victory drought when she won the Meijer Classic two weeks ago, a result she achieved after a change in attitude.

"I think I've been waiting for this for such a long time since I've been having a tough year", she said. "I still can't believe I'm sitting here, next to this trophy". Park made a brilliant par save on 16.

"After the front nine I couldn't actually expect to be leading after the round", Ryu said after making four back-nine birdies to surge pass a spluttering Henderson. But Park chopped the ball out of the tall grass and landed it softly to within a few feet of the hole.

However, Hataoka was the first to drop out of the playoff, though she made par.

With an 8-under-par 64, the lowest final round in the history of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, Hataoka came from nine shots back to join Sung Hyun Park and So Yeon Ryu, in a three-way playoff that Park ultimately won with a birdie at the second sudden-death hole.

Ryu also used a neat approach on 18 to set up a short birdie putt on the par-4 hole. "I felt like, 'I got this, ' when I did the shot".

Prior to the tournament this weekend, Park changed her putter. "You want to be playing the best you can, but I tried to think small and not get too ahead of myself". "I was even joking", Park said.

Hataoka could not then match her two rivals and watched on as Park clinched the title.
