Israel responds to fatal knife attack with new settler homes

In Gaza, medics said a man and a 14-year-old boy were killed and dozens wounded by army fire, bringing to 154 the Palestinian death toll during demonstrations launched on March 30 to demand rights to land lost to Israel in the 1948 war of its founding. The attacker, identified as Muhammad Tareq Yusuf, was eventually shot dead.

A 58-year-old victim was said to be seriously wounded but stable.

The third man, aged 50, also received light stab wounds before fatally shooting the assailant, who was named as Mohammed Dar Youssef from the village of Kobar, near Ramallah. The Israeli army said on Friday it had raided the village, questioned a number of his family members and suspended their work permits.

The Israeli army also said it is "reinforcing the defence" in the settlement of Adam, but Mr Lieberman suggested a longer-term strategy was needed.

Clashes broke out between young Palestinians and soldiers firing teargas during the raid. The settlements are considered illegal under worldwide law, though Israel disputes this.

The settlement policies were deemed illegal by the United Nations, and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court said the Israeli activities constitute war crimes.

Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said earlier Thursday that Israel "must pay a high price with its blood" making an apparent reference to the three killed Palestinians.

There was no response from Abbas's government, which has cut ties with the Trump administration over its stance on Israel.

Dozens of Israelis have been killed in almost three years of mainly lone-wolf attacks.

The attack came after a period of relative calm in the West Bank.

Palestinians say that continued construction of illegal settlements on their land will ruin the chances of future Palestinian state constituting of the occupied West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem as its capital, which was occupied during the 1967 war.

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which rules Gaza, praised the "courageous operation" in the West Bank, without claiming responsibility for it.
