Hollywood and Media Stars ‘Dumbstruck’ Over Trump-Putin ‘#TreasonSummit’

But there are concrete objectives that Trump could seek during his talks with the Russian leader - and foreign policy experts and US lawmakers spent much of the weekend signaling to Trump to use the opportunity to press Putin on 2016 election interference efforts outlined by USA intelligence officials and federal prosecutors and more, without giving away too much to Putin.

He reiterated there had been "no collusion" and that he ran a "clean campaign" and beat his Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton "easily". "We won that race and it's a shame that there can be even a little bit of a cloud over it", he said. And he even welcomed Mr Putin's suggestion that Russian Federation could join the investigation and interview the alleged perpetrators itself!

I have President Putin.

"We've known for years that the Russians routinely try and influence USA elections", he said.

Trump said that "my people" including Dan Coats, his intelligence director "came to me and some others, they said they think it's Russian Federation".

For starters, I have, up to this point, believed in the conclusions reached in an intelligence assessment by the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation that "Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the USA presidential election, the consistent goals of which were to undermine public faith in the United States democratic process, denigrate Secretary (Hillary) Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency".

"The headlines highlight the presidents' turbulent relations with the media and were published between the years 2000 and 2018", the statement said. Seriously, you're telling me this guy only weights 239 pounds?

In general, the Russian leader said, the talks with Mr Trump took place in an "open and businesslike atmosphere" and he characterised them as "successful and useful". Trump said the meeting was a "good start".

The president was also roundly condemned for stating he held "both countries responsible" for the deterioration in US-Russia relations. The auto that then whizzed Mr Putin through Helsinki's blocked-off streets also symbolised the rising global prestige that Mr Putin has cast himself as bestowing upon Russian Federation.

"Once again President Trump mentioned the issue of the so-called interference in the American elections", Putin said.

"I felt this was a message best delivered in person".

Mr Trump would have none of it.

But his remarks on Monday were an extraordinary break from his own administration, which last week indicted 12 Russian officials on charges of hacking Democratic servers in 2016.

Trump said he and Putin would discuss a range of issues, from trade to the military, along with missiles and China. Putin has been late for past meetings with the pope and British queen, among many others.

Both leaders also said they would work together to help resolve the Syrian crisis.

There was no commitment to any specific actions, but both said that ensuring Israel's security was a priority.

"First of all, Russia, as a state, has never interfered with the internal affairs of the United States, let alone its elections", Putin said.

Putin said both countries considered it "necessary" to further work together on many issues, including extension of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, the unsafe situation surrounding the development of elements of the global system of American missile defense, and the implementation of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles as well as avoiding weapons being placed in space.
