Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak arrested amid graft probe

Ousted ex-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was recently the target of a huge raid by the Malaysian Commercial Crime Investigation Department, reports CNN.

Razak is the subject of a corruption investigation after billions of dollars went missing from a state investment fund that he set up.

This story is developing.

Founded by Mr Najib in 2009, 1MDB is being investigated in at least six countries for alleged money laundering and corruption.

The new government has reopened investigations into 1MDB that were stifled under Najib's rule.

He and his luxury-loving wife Rosmah Mansor were questioned by investigators, as were his stepson Riza Aziz - whose firm produced the hit 2013 movie The Wolf Of Wall Street - and his former deputy Zahid Hamidi.

Earlier, a security source said that agents from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission arrested Mr Najib. The new Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali cleared Najib in 2016, saying the money was a donation from the Saudi royal family and that most of it was returned.

"Mohd Najib will be charged tomorrow at 8.30 am at Kuala Lumpur Court", it added.

Veteran legislator Lim Kit Siang, whose party is a member of the current ruling coalition, said Najib's arrest had been expected.

Riza was solemn as he arrived at the anti-graft office and didn't speak to reporters.

The arrest was made at Najib's residence at Jalan Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur. In the US, his production company had reached a $60 million settlement in a suit that alleged the movie was funded by money siphoned from 1MDB.

Civil lawsuits filed by the U.S. Department of Justice allege that almost $4.5 billion from 1MDB was laundered through a complex web of transactions and shell companies.

Three years ago to the day, the Wall Street Journal reported that Malaysian investigators traced almost $700 million of 1MDB money into Najib's personal bank account.

A government task force said Najib's arrest was connected to a suspicious multi-million-dollar transfer into his bank account from SRC International, a former subsidiary of the fund known as 1MDB.
