Djokovic outlasts Nadal in Wimbledon semi

Djokovic outlasts Nadal in Wimbledon semi

The two men waited and waited on Friday as Isner and Anderson went five sets - with Anderson winning the fifth 26-24 - in the other semifinal.

After covering a distance of 7,288.6 feet, Anderson lost his balance and fell while returning at 15-0 on Isner's serve, got back up on his feet and hit a hasty, left-handed forehand shot to keep himself in the game.

Kevin Anderson might live in Florida these days, but he's still a South African citizen - and his fellow Saffas are fiercely claiming him as their own again, as he heads to the Wimbledon Men's Singles final on Sunday, after an extraordinary semi-final that saw him battle John Isner of the US for more than six hours.

A showdown between two tennis skyscrapers - with Isner topping the 6 foot 8 Anderson by two inches - predictably featured three tiebreaks and 102 thunderbolt aces but it was the 32-year-old South African who delivered the knockout blow.

The eighth seed will face either twice champion Rafael Nadal or three-times victor Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final.

Numerous best points came in the tiebreaker, including a 23-shot rally that Nadal finished off with a forehand half-volley drop shot to set up his first set point.

With Merton council imposing at 23:00 BST curfew on play, the players will resume their encounter before the women's final between American 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and Germany's Angelique Kerber.

He had break points in the 15th, 21st and 35th games of the decider before taking victory when a tired Isner, who had needed treatment for blisters on his right hand, hit long.

While the Isner-Anderson marathon was taking place on Centre Court, there was another epic match being played under the radar over on Court 3.

Then came the full trailer in the third set, when Isner's serve was finally broken this Wimbledon after a whopping 110 games.

They played until approximately 11 p.m. local time under the roof, when play was suspended.

Serbia's Djokovic had beaten the current world No. 1 in the 2011 final, the last time Nadal advanced beyond the fourth round until this year. The U.S. Open does use a tiebreaker after 6-6. It was clear very few things separated the two players. But Djokovic came back with three straight games of his own and was back on serve, 3-3.

According to The Score's report, Isner suggested after Friday's match that a tiebreaker could begin after a fifth set gets to 12-12. "They're pretty antsy for us to get off the court".

The 33-year-old agreed with Anderson that Wimbledon, the Australian Open and Roland Garros should fall in line with the US Open and introduce a tiebreak in the final set.

The semi-finals follow the shock exit of fan-favourite Roger Federer on Wednesday, after he was knocked out by Anderson. It remains to be seen if he can recover physically and emotionally for what could be a career-defining match, his second Grand Slam final in the last 11 months.
