Serena bows out of French Open

Serena bows out of French Open

Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza and Russia's Maria Sharapova earned a place in the French Open round of 16 after winning their respective games on Saturday.

The shock withdrawal came just minutes before she was due on Court Philippe Chatrier to face fierce rival Sharapova.

American Serena Williams' audacious attempt to win the French Open for a fourth time ended in crushing anti-climax on Monday as injury, rather than an old foe, forced the 36-year-old to admit defeat at Roland Garros.

Her voice trembled a bit during a brief news conference, where she explained she will get an MRI on Tuesday and consult with doctors before figuring out what comes next.

Williams cited a pectoral injury as the issue, saying she can't physically serve at the moment.

She further said that the book was so much about her instead of Sharapova and she was actually surprised by it.

"So I'm not going to fight with myself about that. I didn't know what kind of problem, but I knew there was something really wrong", Mouratoglou said. On top of that, she said, that it "wasn't necessarily true".

The two-time Paris champion, seeded 28, dropped just three games as she knocked out sixth seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova. "I wish her a speedy recovery and hope she returns to the tour soon".

Williams has defeated Sharapova 18 straight times and 19 times in 21 matches.

Dressed in the black bodysuit with a red band around the waist she resembled a superhero - not just a supermum - and was playing as if she had never been away.

Kasatkina, the 14th seed, will meet another Grand Slam victor, US Open champion Sloane Stephens, in the final eight.

"And I have made every sacrifice that I could". She played a final here. And while she's "pretty much had every injury in the book", this was the first time dealing with this particular malady. "I think what happens there should definitely maybe stay there and not necessarily talk about it in a not-so-positive way in a book". "I just started. So I'm just really trying to get my bearings and trying to feel out where I am and see where I can go", Serena stated.

"She's been playing for over a year now. Everybody looked forward to this match", Hogstedt said.
