Portugal held to 1-1 draw by Iran in dramatic fashion

Portugal held to 1-1 draw by Iran in dramatic fashion

Carlos Queiroz claimed Iran deserved to beat Portugal and progress to the last 16 after the dramatic 1-1 draw which brought their World Cup to an end.

If Spain and Portugal both were to lose their final match, Iran would win the group and goal difference could decide who finishes second.

Fernando Hierro's Spain, the 2010 world champions, will play Russian Federation in the next round in Moscow on Sunday while European champions Portugal face Uruguay in Sochi the previous day.

Spain will meet hosts Russian Federation at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.

"So the first conclusion I draw is that despite all these challenges, we emerged on top, so we need to look at the silver lining, think positive".

"It was a very competitive World Cup game, minute-by-minute, duel-by-duel, playing against one of the best teams in the world".

If both Portugal and Spain win, the victor of the group comes down to goal differential.

Both teams are guaranteed to advance to the second round, but the victor of this match will determine the first and second spot in the group.

"Now we have to continue with this mindset of winning and wait for the next match".

Hierro said he would "work on the mental aspect of things, especially regarding motivation", with his team, which is locked with Portugal at the top of Group B with Iran just one point behind. He later escaped a red card after the referee consulted VAR and showed him a yellow for elbowing an opposition player.

He added: "We would have loved to have beaten Spain - that was why we came here".

"We can't take anything for granted, we have to use our skills and our qualities and that is what is most important going into the match".

"I'm going to repeat that our initial goal was to be at the top of the group and we've reached that goal".

"Morocco are an excellent team who had lost two matches 1-0, while deserving much more, and this entire group was very tough for us".

They dominated possession, playing nearly three times the number of passes than their Asian opponents, and were more intent on creating chances through the midfield rather than just directing long balls towards Ronaldo.
