People of different nationalities join mats on International Yoga Day

HUNDREDS of yoga enthusiasts of various levels of skills, ages and nationalities laid down their mats, relaxed and communed with nature as part of the celebration of World Yoga Day in the Kingdom on Thursday.

The JD (U) said Kumar has been practising yoga daily even before it was declared as an International Day by the United Nations in 2015 and "it would be wrong to attach any political meaning to personal decisions".

The International Yoga Day (IDY) which is celebrated on June 21 each year, is witnessing a series of celebrations which are being kicked off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with full zeal and enthusiasm.

This date has been selected by PM Modi as in the northern hemisphere and it also marks the day on which Lord Shiva began to impart Yoga for his followers and thus became their first Guru.

In a statement online the Embassy said, "We are looking forward to welcoming our friends from Oman as well as expatriate communities living in Oman to our grand yoga session on 21 June, 2018 from 1830 hrs [at the] Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre".

Echoing a similar theme, Sri Lanka Consul General Abdul Wahid Abdul Salam said, "I have learned yoga five years back in Bangalore in India by staying in an ashram". He also asserted that Yoga has become one of the unifying forces of the world.

"Considering how life is so fast-paced in Abu Dhabi, just like any other big city in the world, it is no wonder Yoga is being adopted by people of various backgrounds".

As millions of yoga enthusiasts stretched and twisted their bodies, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said yoga should not be seen as part of any religious practice.

However in its present-day use, yoga is often no more than a form of exercise, Michael says.

In Bihar, Nitish Kumar did not participate in the main Yoga Day event in Patna which set tongues wagging.

#07:05 AM: Yoga India's gift to the world, says Modi: "Yoga is India's gift to the world".

In West Bengal, neither chief minister Banerjee nor any of her ministers participated in any yoga session anywhere in the state.

Addressing the gathering at Friday, he said, "In today's fast changing time, Yoga binds together a person's body, brain and soul, hence making one experience a feeling of peace". The message of Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on the occasion of International Day of Yoga was also screened.

The word "yoga" has its origins in the ancient Sanskrit language and means "to attach, join, harness, yoke". He has been practicing Yoga for the last 26 years.

In Kerala, Vijayan said Yoga can be practised by all, irrespective of caste and religion, adding it should be done with a "free and secular" mind.

According to Ambassador Suri, Yoga is already popular in the UAE and we see more and more people recognizing its contribution to mental and physical well-being.
