National Spelling Bee: The victor is …

National Spelling Bee: The victor is …

Throwing everything he had into his one shot at glory, 14-year-old Karthik outlasted better-known spellers on Thursday night and became the champion after a dramatically abrupt end to the competition, when 12-year-old Naysa Modi misspelled the word "Bewusstseinslage" in the first championship round. But then the three-time Missoula County spelling bee champion will once again hit the books.

Third place contestant, Abhijay Kodali, is also from Texas.

"I don't care", said Karthik's father, Krishna Nemmani. The prime time finals featured 11 students who had previously been to the national contest.

It also now has the distinction of being the word that cost a local boy a shot at being the 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee champion. Karthik added that as soon as he heard the pronouncer say the word "koinonia", he knew he was going to win.

Like many top spellers, Karthik was a precocious preschooler - he arranged block letters to spell "horse" at age 3 and won his first spelling bee at 4½, his dad said. Naysa tied for seventh place last year, tied for 46th place the year before and tied for 50th place in 2015.

While Vinay beat out almost 300 contestants for the top prize in 2017, this year's competition allowed for a record 516 children to show off their spelling abilities-all thanks to a new program, dubbed RSVBee.

Anisha Rao, 12, from Dublin, Calif., left, and Nidhi Vadlamudi, 12, from Santa Clara, Calif., yawn and stretch during a break at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., Thursday, May 31, 2018. "I wanted to watch", he said with a laugh. Put your spelling skills to the test with these seven words from this year's bee.

She said she struggled with the "ae" because that's not normally seen in German. "You use the clues they give you and put them together to get the word right", she told the Miami Herald. Gordy correctly spelled "cadre" in round two but misspelled "philistinism" in round three.

A record-shattering 516 spellers qualified - compared to 291 the year before.
