Lewis Hamilton relieved to finish Canadian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton relieved to finish Canadian Grand Prix

It was all about Ferrari at this year's Canadian Grand Prix and Sebastian Vettel sealed it with a victory.

Canada marked the one-third point of the 21-race 2018 season and Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff described it as a "major wake-up call" for his entire team.

Lewis Hamilton is still confident Mercedes has the capability of giving him a vehicle capable of winning this year's title.

Vettel's title rival Lewis Hamilton could only finish fifth in his Mercedes after a tough race and now trails Vettel by a point in the title race.

Hamilton, who had engine problems in the race, said: "It could have been a lot worse".

In contrast, Ferrari arrived with their new engine, complete with upgraded fuel, and the team felt it delivered a gain, one that would be particularly useful on a power track such as Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.

"I was just anxious, I told them on the last lap, so people don't jump on the track, waving flags and celebrating, because we are still going at full pace". "It's a great result for all the team, but I think I could have been even faster".

"You need to get the right balance between pushing the development very hard and adding performance to the auto and at the same time keeping reliability", Wolff said.

"Today we're not the favourites", Vettel said.

"There is not the historic pattern of cars strong on certain circuits and weak on others".

"I think this was the maximum. was about hundredths of a second, so maybe from pole it could have been different, but from P2 we maxed out. They are the outliers, but you have to expect everyone to be strong everywhere". In the Constructors' Championship, Mercedes leads with 206 points, Ferrari is second with 189 points and Red Bull is third with 134 points. As a result, they had to wait until final practice before running the tyre for the first time during the weekend. "At the end of the day all those issues are dealt with by the shareholders, they're not a team issue, so we don't have any involvement in it at all".

Does Wolff now think that doing limited mileage on the rubber in Yas Marina was an error?

After undergoing two examinations, though, doctors were happy that there was nothing wrong and the New Zealander was released with a clean bill of health. "Also myself didn't get the rhythm yet so missing a little bit of the laps but overall we tried to go through the programme as good as we could". "I corrected, but I didn't have enough room, and we collided along the wall".

"It's always those many factors that all contribute to solid performance".

Hamilton endured engine troubles in Montreal, eventually finishing fifth to lose the championship lead.
