Gimenez gives Uruguay last-gasp win against Egypt

Gimenez gives Uruguay last-gasp win against Egypt

Egypt made their first World Cup appearance since 1990, but superstar Mohamed Salah had to watch the full 90 minutes from the bench as his teammates were defeated by a last-minute goal.

Egypt next face hosts Russian Federation on Tuesday before concluding their group-stage campaign against Saudi Arabia on 25 June.

While Egypt may not be realistically aiming to win the entire thing, there will be a sense among their fans that progress from the group should be the minimum, but can Uruguay really measure their credentials and their own agenda against them?

Mohamed El-Shenawy of Egypt is dejected after winning goal scores by Jose Gimenez of Uruguay during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group A match between Egypt and Uruguay at Ekaterinburg Arena on June 15, 2018 in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

While Salah is grabbing all the attention in the lead-up to the match, the La Celeste themselves have two of the most lethal forwards going around in Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.

Egypt's Group A schedule kicks off on June 15 against Uruguay, followed by Russian Federation on June 19 and Saudi Arabia on June 25.

In attack, Egypt got the ball forward but struggled to create clear openings all match and only looked to stretch Uruguay on the counter when substitute Karbaha came on. While Oblak in his own right, is up there with the best of the business, in front of him are two men who just seem to love the art of defending and the hardness that comes with it.

Named man-of-the-match for his performance in Egypt's 1-0 defeat, there was nothing he could do about Jose Gimenez's 90th minute headed victor.

Which Nigerian player do you expect to shine at the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup?

Without any match action since suffering a shoulder injury in the Champions League final, the North Africans' coach, Hector Cuper, admitted that Salah wasn't ready to play.

"I don't know what happened but I will not speculate".

"Mo Salah is an extremely important player for us, nobody can deny that, but you need to have a good team, and we have a good team", Cuper said after the game.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported how the Russian national team dismantled Saudi Arabia in the opening match of the tournament.

"We wanted to avoid risks in this match [with Salah], but I think he will be fine for the next game".
