Elon Musk working on new transportation transit system for Chicago

Elon Musk working on new transportation transit system for Chicago

"The Boring Company on Thursday confirmed a report in The Chicago Tribune that said Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office picked the company and would participate in talks over a high-speed project called the Chicago Express Loop". USA cities are looking for alternatives to overcrowded highways and impossibly expensive subways.

The company has designed a system that uses computer-controlled electric-powered wheeled "skates" that can travel at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour while carrying passengers, goods or vehicles riding on top of them.

Musk, who started The Boring Company in 2016 with the goal of combatting LA's "soul-destroying" traffic, is promising to make tunneling cheaper and faster, and to radically rethink the vehicles carrying passengers.

Addressing Chicago's press, Elon Musk expressed his thanks at the city and Mayor Emanuel for placing his faith in the Boring Co.

Musk is banking on being able to tunnel much faster than any other company, although his technology remains unproven.

Chicago in March shortlisted Boring and O'Hare Xpress LLC, a consortium that included a company that designed a terminal London's Heathrow Airport, according to Bloomberg. The company is digging a test tunnel near the Hawthorne, California headquarters of SpaceX. The Boring Company released Wednesday renderings of what the underground system and rail cars would look like.

Some are skeptical such a project will be built.

Entrepreneur Elon Musk says a high-speed transportation system that will whisk people between downtown Chicago and O'Hare International Airport in about 12 minutes could be operational in about three years.

The Boring Company and the Chicago mayor have noted that it is far too early to provide a concrete timeline for the completion of the high-speed tunnel system.

The Boring Co.in April said it raised $113 million, mostly from Musk himself.

A lease deal will need to be struck with the CTA to use its Block 37 station, and Rivkin said he "expects" that Boring will pay for usage.

Also, it's not clear if the benefits of the airport connection would justify the costs.

A success in Chicago would give Boring Co. considerable credibility as it tries to move ahead on other projects, including service within Los Angeles and a planned system between Washington, D.C., and New York City.

Alderman Scott Waguespack, whose ward covers parts of the city's north and northwest sides, said there are many unanswered questions and the project should be subject to a public hearing.

Fares would amount to $20 to $25 a ride, the Tribune reported.

"It's easy to be a critic or a cynic", Mayor Emanuel said. City Hall is betting on a big enough market of travelers who prefer a quicker, comfier pod ride to an O'Hare-bound trek on a crowded CTA Blue Line train. "The industry needs new thinking and technology".
