Dead After Vehicle Fleeing Border Patrol Agents Crashes In South Texas

"We've seen this many, many times".

Border Patrol agents began chasing the vehicle around noon before a Dimmit County sheriff's deputy took over the chase, just west of Big Wells, Boyd said.

Boyd said the victims were taken to hospitals.

Four of the migrants reportedly died at the scene, with a fifth later dying at the hospital.

The Border Patrol said in a statement Sunday night that two other vehicles had been travelling alongside the SUV earlier in the day.

When asked why Border Patrol agents started the chase, Boyd said, "It's called good police work".

Several people were arrested after another agent stopped the second vehicle, but the third vehicle didn't stop when an agent tried to pull it over, Customs and Border Protection said.

The crash was reported when Border Patrol agents attempted to stop an SUV in Dimmit County, reports said.

Some of the injured people were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 90 miles northeast. Five people were transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center, including the driver who is believed to be a United States citizen. "I think we need a wall in my opinion".

The driver is now in custody with Homeland Security Investigations, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The vehicle traveling more than 100 miles per hour when it crashed, according to local authorities.

Dimmit County officials confirmed Sunday afternoon that five people have died in a crash involving undocumented immigrants.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those who died in the crash", the Border Patrol said.
