Could Disney Be Pressing Pause On Star Wars Spinoffs?

Could Disney Be Pressing Pause On Star Wars Spinoffs?

According to Star Wars News Net, that is what Lucasfilm wanted to do, in order to give Ron Howard and the marketing team more time, but Disney refused.

For now, the only Star Wars film confirmed with a release date is the upcoming Episode IX, which will debut December 20, 2019.

Apparently, Lucasfilm had been heavily involved in pre-production on the long-rumoured Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, and that work has now been shut down indefinitely, while the hold will also presumably apply to the Boba Fett movie, which Logan helmer James Mangold signed on to write and direct last month.

"Lucasfilm has made a decision to put plans for more A Star Wars Story spinoff movies on hold, instead opting to focus their attention on Star Wars: Episode IX and what the next trilogy of Star Wars films will be after that film", Collider reports, attributing the news to "sources with knowledge of the situation". Unlike the first three Disney Star Wars films, Solo occupied a traditional May summer slot, and one so close to two other movies that so obviously overshadowed it. "Even if you paid for a ticket!" There are plenty more of those on the way, with J.J. Abrams' Episode IX, Rian Johnson's very own all-new trilogy, and original stories from Game of Thrones' David Benioff and D.B. Weiss coming along at some point in the future.

In its defense, Solo was competing with Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, both of which were released a few weeks earlier. What? This is Star Wars we're talking about here.

No official word has been given about this so remember this is all going off of a report but one would think that after the fans decreed they didn't want to have Han Solo's backstory maybe a faceless corporation listened? Solo and Rogue One, plus the would-be Obi-Wan and Boba Fett movies, take place during the 19 years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

The news comes to us from Collider and is somewhat of a drastic reversal considering the recent murmurings of as many as nine films in the making.
