Congress skeptical of Trump's G7 strategy

Congress skeptical of Trump's G7 strategy

Two points of the joint communique formulated by the G7 members were not negotiated with the U.S. president, but that didn't prevent the Canadian prime minister from announcing that all member-states had reached common ground on the final statement. "I mean, he really kind of stabbed us in the back".

Trump responded to the Canadian prime minster's news conference by tweeting that because of Trudeau's statement, he would not sign the communique that the G-7 nations had drafted at the summit.

After Mr Trump had left the summit in Quebec he rounded on Justin Trudeau personally via Twitter, suggesting the Canadian prime minister was "very dishonest and weak" and "acts hurt when called out".

Taking to Twitter, he said that there is a "special place in heaven" for Trudeau.

"He's happy", said Trump, to laughter.

Trump, after announcing the tariffs, sends message to Trudeau about NAFTA talks on May 31 - "Earlier today, this message was conveyed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada: The United State (sic) will agree to a fair deal, or there will be no deal at all".

Mr Trump also said he might double down on import tariffs by hitting the sensitive auto industry, throwing the G7's efforts to show a united front into disarray.

"Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!" the US president tweeted.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of undermining Trump right before his meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The outburst against Trudeau, and by association the other G7 members, is only the latest incident in which Trump has clashed with America's closest allies, even as he has had warm words for autocrats like Kim and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

The European Union on Monday backed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after U.S. President Donald Trump branded him "dishonest" and "weak" following a Group of Seven summit of leaders.

In a separate interview on CBS's "Face the Nation", Kudlow said the Trump had a "very successful, calm, friendly, respectful bilateral" with Trudeau and that the U.S. won't withdraw from Nafta. "Canada, thank you for the flawless organisation of G7!", he said further, about the meet hosted by Trudeau in Quebec. We get on the plane, and then this guy, Trudeau, starts blasting us.

She acknowledged the European Union would have to respond to the tariffs with its own penalties on USA imports but she hoped that it would not lead to wider "tit-for-tat" reprisals.

Asked what Trudeau did that amounted to betrayal, Kudlow criticized the Canadian leader for holding a press conference in which he called USA tariffs "insulting".

In an interview Sunday on German public television, Merkel also says European leaders won't be "taken advantage of" on trade.

But "at the same time we need to avoid tit-for-tat escalation" and maintain a constructive dialogue, she said.

But Arizona Sen. John McCain, who is often aligned with Graham, pushed back Saturday against Trump's refusal to sign the G-7 statement.

"I think there is quite a difference between all the partners".

The G7 summit, which brought together world leaders from Germany, Japan, Canada, the US, Italy, France and the United Kingdom, was held in Canada over the weekend and it wasn't plain sailing for Trump and the other leaders.

Trudeau fires back on May 31 over the tariffs being applied on the premise Canada poses a national security threat to the U.S.
