Apple finally acknowledges its new MacBook keyboards suck

Apple finally acknowledges its new MacBook keyboards suck

The company says the issues are limited to a small percentage of MacBooks, but its offering free repairs. While opinion was split over whether the keys gave as pleasing a stroke-feel as Apple suggested, more worrying were the growing number of people claiming their keyboards had exhibited faults. Every model listed, right from 2015's 12-inch Retina MacBook to 2017's 15-inch MacBook Pro, comes with the butterfly switch design Apple first rolled out with its computer revamp in 2015. Some MacBook Pros from 2016 and 2017 are also eligible.

If you already paid for your keyboard to get repaired Apple will give you a refund. Apple has acknowledged that a "small percentage of keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models" may have the sticky keyboard problem that users have been complaining about. I was able to get it fixed for free because I had purchased AppleCare; the repairs could have otherwise cost me more than $700, based on the receipts given to me by Apple with the fix. The so-called "butterfly" keys allowed for a much lower-profile keyboard with reduced travel distance when pressed.

Owners of MacBook laptops with faulty keyboards are getting some relief. But in the meantime, consumers can at least get keyboards that are having problems repaired at no cost-other than some of their time, of course.

The announcement that the "butterfly" keyboards would be repaired follows a federal class-action lawsuit filed against MacBook or Macbook Pro for the defect last month in Northern California.

Apple forums are overflowing with reports of Geniuses who have told customers that Apple is "collecting data" on the issue.

Apple said affected customers can receive service at no charge via a retail Apple Store, through Apple's mail-in fix program, or through an Apple-authorized service provider. Users with affected keyboards can take their MacBook to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to determine whether they are eligible. Though you might face some charges if your laptop is damaged in some other way to the point that it interferes with keyboard repairs.

"The type of service will be determined after the keyboard is examined and may involve the replacement of one or more keys or the whole keyboard", Apple says.
