Alice Johnson thanks Trump for Kardashian-backed release

Alice Johnson thanks Trump for Kardashian-backed release

At the time of sentencing, The Associated Press reported that US federal Judge Julia Gibbons said Johnson was "the quintessential entrepreneur" of a drug ring that dealt in tons of cocaine.

Kardashian West tweeted that her phone call with Alice Johnson was "a moment [she] will never forget". Kardashian West was the one who broke the news to Johnson that she was going to be released, Johnson told reporters outside of the prison in Aliceville, Alabama, where she was being held.

"[Johnson] lost her longtime job, got a divorce, her son died", Kardashian said. Johnson said she heard her name called over the intercom for her to report to her case manager when she heard Kardashian West's voice.

Johnson's case caught nationwide attention after the reality-television star Kim Kardashian West took notice of her case previous year and retained an attorney to help her clemency bid.

Kim Kardashian West responded to critics of her visit to the White House who said she was legitimizing the president and his policies. She visited the White House last week of press Johnson's case.

Trump has also pardoned conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, former Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and Kristian Saucier, a Navy sailor. "We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson's future and hopeful that she-and so many like her-will get a second chance at life".

Jones then addressed the speculation that Trump was simply using Kardashian as part of a PR stunt.

The likely emotional face-to-face meeting would follow a chat on the phone between the pair, when Kim called Ms Johnson in jail to personally deliver the news of the pardon granted by Mr Trump. She met with President Trump last week to discuss prison reform.

In an interview Thursday night with Fox News' Martha MacCallum on "The Story", Johnson expressed her gratitude for Trump's decision the day before to commute her sentence.

Cameras captured Johnson's reunion with family members after a van transported her outside the prison. "Kim just walks in, [and they decide] "OK, let her out", Bickmore said. The White House cited Johnson's spotless record in prison and work to rehabilitate herself. "Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are deserving of a second chance", she said in the tweet.

Johnson has already served 21 years of a life sentence after she was convicted on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine, according to the nonprofit Can-Do, which advocates for clemency for non-violent drug offenders.
