Twitter to soon launch an encrypted messaging feature

Twitter to soon launch an encrypted messaging feature

Despite turning a profit (a relatively paltry $91 million, given the company's current market capitalization of $23.56 billion) for the first time in the company's history back in February, Twitter has yet to keep pace with many of its rivals with regards encrypted messaging services and additional security features. There's no telling when secret conversations will be released as a feature, if at all.

Twitter is reportedly working on an encrypted messaging feature, called Secret Conversations.

According to TechCrunch, the "Secret conversation" option in Twitter for Android was spotted by Jane Manchun Wong earlier this month.

In a separate tweet, Wong notes that she has also spotted a new option for using FIDO U2F security keys for two-factor authentication, along with a new "Quality Filter" that rids of low-quality search results on the social network. A spokesperson for the company declined to comment on the matter. For instance, messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram use end-to-end encryption. Albeit, it's not clear when Twitter might officially launch the "secret conversations" feature but this new introduction could make Twitter a better platform for sensitive communication.

Twitter may gain the upper hand on WhatsApp if Facebook starts to go through the conversations.

A couple of years ago Edward Snowden proposed such an idea to Twitter's CEO Jack Dorsey, in which Dorsey responded by saying that this is something they'll think about.

Now direct messages on Twitter are now sent in plain text, meaning that anyone who has access to them on the internal network can read them. Implementing E2E encryption adds another layer of privacy when it comes to communicating with people on Twitter. Although Twitter is able to establish itself as one of the most convenient, open messaging source, without encryption, those messages are subject to encumbering by third-parties, precisely twitter itself.

Twitter admitted a bug allowed for passwords to be stored in plain text in an internal log. Whats app co-founder Jan Koum lately left WhatsApp, also " The Washington Post said the passing could have already been associated with "gaps in system" on face book's advertising focusing on and encryption strategies.
