Trump contradicts adviser on North Korea

Trump should do the same, thinking strategically about the motivations of all the summit's key players: North Korea, China, South Korea, Japan, and Russian Federation.

In an apparent attempt to get a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un back on track, US President Donald Trump distanced himself from his national security advisor's comments on a potential path to denuclearization. It does mean a review and reassessment of all the guarantees we have issued to go to war on behalf of other countries, and the eventual transfer of responsibility for the defense of our friends over to our friends.

"The Libyan model isn't a model that we have at all when we are thinking of North Korea", Trump said.

Yonhap reported that North Korea disapproved the on-going military drills between South Korea and the United States. To mark the anniversary, Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani sought to steer the media narrative by saying Mueller's team concluded they can not indict a sitting president.

"The president is ready if the meeting takes place".

The Pentagon says there are no plans to change or reduce the scope of the ongoing military exercises between the US and South Korea that triggered an angry reaction from North Korea, casting doubt on the planned summit with President Donald Trump next month.

National Security Adviser John Bolton explicitly cited "the Libya model of 2003-2004" as a basis for the North Korea talks last month, which drew personal rebuke from the North Korean government on Wednesday.

Speaking to journalists in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump seems to have disavowed Bolton's statements, saying that his administration is not pursuing a "Libyan model" in the attempt to negotiate the de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

"Measures that North Korea has taken to ease tension on the Korean peninsula should be acknowledged", he added. "We think that the same thing that we thought yesterday, that it's an important conversation to have and it is something we are hopeful that does".

But Mr Trump warned that failure to make a deal could have grave consequences for Kim. "So we'll see what happens".

The United States and its allies have paused their efforts to increase sanctions on North Korea to give diplomacy a chance to work. But Yoho told me in an interview that the lawmakers' intention is to give the Trump administration leverage with both Pyongyang and Beijing by making Congress the bad cop.

He says nothing has changed since North Korean officials warned on Wednesday they might cancel the summit over US insistence on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. "If the meeting happens, it happens and if it doesn't, we go into the next step". Pyongyang has blamed the Libya deal for Gaddafi's eventual downfall.

Republican Senator James Risch of Idaho, a member of the Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees, remained optimistic that Trump would meet Kim.

The experts said North Korea's threat could increase the chance for delaying or even canceling the summit.

For decades, Washington has watched in horror as North Korea - propped up by trade with China - has made a series of technological leaps toward building a missile capable of carrying a nuclear weapon to U.S. cities. North Korea could also be trying to capitalize on an apparent gap in messaging between Bolton and U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo.
