Top Senate intelligence Democrat to vote for Trump's CIA chief nominee

WASHINGTON ― Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump's nominee to head the CIA, says the agency shouldn't have used its infamous enhanced interrogation techniques, a week after she repeatedly refused to take a stand on the program's morality at her Senate confirmation hearing.

Amid criticism of Gina Haspel for her role in the Central Intelligence Agency's enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding, one green beret made a decision to argue that waterboarding wasn't actually torture.

Though Haspel's nomination has gained steam, it's not yet a given that she will confirmed.

Green Beret sniper Tim Kennedy wholeheartedly supports Haspel's nomination, calling her an "amazing hero".

Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain is urging his colleagues to reject Haspel's nomination. With a 51-49 Republican majority - and one of the GOP no votes, Sen.

However, two Democrats - Manchin and Indiana Sen.

However, Haspel refused to condemn past interrogation practices as "immoral", despite intense prodding from California Democratic Sen.

Kaine said he echoed "my colleague John McCain's disappointment in Gina Haspel's failure to condemn [torture] as immoral during her hearing", adding, "I believe the Central Intelligence Agency needs leadership that not only honors the rule of law but meets a higher calling to the moral principles of our nation".

"Over the previous year I've had the opportunity to work with Ms. Haspel in her role as Deputy Director, and I have always found her to be professional and forthright with the Intelligence Committee", Warner said.

Notably absent from Haspel's letter was any statement about her role in destroying 92 videotapes of interrogations carried out at the Thailand facility.

"She's (Haspel) is very highly regarded within the intelligence community" Heitkamp said.

"We got valuable information from debriefing Al-Qaeda detainees", Haspel told senators last week.

A career intelligence officer and now acting director, Haspel faces ongoing questions over her work running a covert detention site where terror suspects were brutally interrogated.

As for Mr. Paul, he has expressed deep reservations about Ms. Haspel since earlier this spring when Mr. Trump nominated her to replace Mike Pompeo, who became secretary of state. I'm not one of those people who calls it torture. "It's a key part of how evasive she's been".

Under a tough grilling last week, Haspel pledged she would not restart the waterboarding program, even if pressured by President Trump - who has supported bringing back waterboarding or something worse. The vote by the full Senate has not yet been scheduled.
