Toddler dies after divisive legal challenge

The terminally ill 23-month-old British toddler at the center of a legal battle died on Saturday.

On Facebook he wrote: "My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings. absolutely heartbroken".

But the boy's parents fought in court, all the way up to the British Court of Appeal, to keep him on life support.

Another, Mary Fiander, wrote, "God bless you, attractive Alfie".

"I know the date and time my child is going to die and we haven't even had time as a family to come to terms with this".

Explaining the decision to discontinue treatment, Professor Russell Viner, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health undersigned a statement issued by the institution.

The words "Save Alfie Evans" were written out on pieces of paper and placed at the front.

Viner added that, in general, withdrawing life-sustaining treatment may be decided upon if treatment is "unable or unlikely to result in the child living much longer" or "where treatment may prolong life but will cause the child unacceptable pain and suffering".

Alfie was in the middle of a huge legal battle between his parents and the courts.

His parents said that the youngster had defied doctors' expectations and they took their case to the Court of Appeal, but the application to take him overseas was rejected.

Alfie was taken off life support on Monday, and an appeals court upheld a previous decision barring the family from taking the child overseas days later despite his having been granted Italian citizenship to ease the process.

"I am deeply moved by the death of little Alfie", the pope said. "The only author of life, from its beginning to its natural end, is God", he said.

The pope, who met with Alfie's father last week, has offered public prayers for Alfie and his family several times, including at a general audience and in several Twitter posts.

Alfie tragically passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning, his father confirmed.

"Our baby boy grew his wings tonight ... We are heartbroken", his mother, Kate James, posted on a Facebook page, "Alfies Army".

"They have left no stone unturned in their desire to do the best for Alfie", Williams continued. After the ruling, the toddler's parents released a statement thanking the doctors and hospital staff who cared for their son, saying they wanted to "build bridges" with Alder Hey.
