Sunda Evening Update on Subtropical Storm Alberto

Sunda Evening Update on Subtropical Storm Alberto

The NHC said Alberto had maximum sustained winds of near 65 miles per hour with higher gusts and that little change in strength is expected before the storm makes landfall on the northern Gulf Coast later Monday.

In Florida, some beaches have been closed and low-lying areas evacuated. Lifeguards posted red flags along the white sands of Pensacola Beach, where swimming and wading were banned because of high surf and risky conditions.

Subtropical Storm Alberto was disrupting plans for Memorial Day barbecues and beach outings in Alabama, Florida and MS, as the storm continued churning north through the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.

The slow-moving system is expected to cause wet misery across the eastern U.S. Gulf Coast over the holiday weekend. According to the National Weather Service, almost half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle-related.

Over 350mm of rain is possible along the coast, which in the long term will be beneficial, given the dry conditions which have prevailed in recent weeks. And in the Tampa Bay area on the central Gulf Coast, cities offered sandbags for homeowners anxious about floods.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 40 counties that will be impacted most by Alberto.

The evacuations affect about 4,200 homes.

It also triggered mandatory evacuations of some small, sparsely populated Gulf Coast barrier islands in one Florida county.

Gusty showers began lashing parts of Florida on Sunday, and authorities were warning of the possibility of flash flooding.

Alberto, the first named Atlantic storm of 2018, which spun up days before the formal June 1 start of the hurricane season, was packing maximum sustained winds near 105 kilometres per hour and was expected to drop as much as 30cm of rain, slamming an area from MS to western Georgia, the Miami-based hurricane centre said. The Florida panhandle, a good portion of Alabama and western Georgia are dramatically more at risk for flash flooding with this storm. The storm was expected to make landfall later Monday.

With conditions expected to worsen overnight, officials were encouraging people planning to check out today to give themselves extra time.

"You have to use caution because nature can sometimes be unsafe and if you're not familiar with it, your very, very happy holiday can all of a sudden go from extreme joy to extreme sadness", said Dave Greenwood, Escambia County Water Safety Chief. But he says a lot of people braved the weather and showed up anyway.

It is forecast to drop as much as 30cm (12in) of rain across MS to western Georgia and to bring storm swells of about 60-120cm (2-4ft) to low-lying areas.

Wake County is under the watch from 1 a.m. on Monday through 8 a.m. on Tuesday along with Chatham, Cumberland, Edgecombe, Franklin, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Nash, Sampson, Scotland, Wayne and Wilson counties.

"Alberto has maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour (105 km per hour) which is about 10 miles (16 km) shy of being a hurricane".

Slowly strengthening Subtropical Storm Alberto could cause more than $1 billion in economic losses to the U.S. Gulf Coast as it tracks north, bringing a growing threat of floods, but it's had little impact on offshore energy production.

The storm is expected to make landfall early Monday morning on Florida's Panhandle.
