Student shot in arm at California school, teen suspect held

Student shot in arm at California school, teen suspect held

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head and a 15-year-old girl shot in the wrist at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles on February 1, officials said.

The off-duty LAPD officer who apprehended the suspect at the Vons supermarket said he had received a call from his mother, who stated that he ran away from the home that morning after they "were having trouble with him, McDonnell said".

The victim was taken to a local hospital in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery, Harris said.

Agents with the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were heading to the scene, the agency said.

On Friday, a gunman entered Highland High School in Palmdale, California and shot a student.

Deputies headed to the high school around 7 a.m. after receiving calls of someone with a gun at the campus located in the 39000 block of 25th Street West. Deputies found the suspect off campus.

He says one student was shot in the arm and the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the shooter and the victim.

Highland High student Katharina Smith, 16, said she was driving to the school when she saw "a ton of police racing toward school".

Deputies reported to the elementary school but found no victims and no sign of a shooter, Nishida said.

"Unfortunately, that may be a result of why we were able to to put an end to this so quickly was this rapid deployment and rapid response", said Capt. Darren Harris of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A person was detained after deputies responded to a report of a man with a gun at Highland High School, which is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) away.

Highland High students were evacuated and brought to the Antelope Valley Mall.

Just after 9 a.m., Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies confirmed that Highland High School had been cleared; the lockdown was lifted about 90 minutes later. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Johnny Lewis Sr., whose 17-year-old son is a student at the school, told the Los Angeles Times that he never thought he would experience a school shooting.

The motive for the shooting is unknown and it's unclear whether it is gang related, Schrader said.

Deputy Charles Moore says there is no confirmation of an actual person with a gun or any shooting.
