Rory McIlroy Shoots 1-Under at 2018 Players Championship Despite Driver Issues

Rory McIlroy Shoots 1-Under at 2018 Players Championship Despite Driver Issues

The next step is having a chance on Sunday.

"This is my ninth time here [at Sawgrass], so I'm not a spring chicken any more". Tim Clark (2010) and Craig Perks (2002) are the only players to make this their first PGA Tour victory. He hit his next shot from the tee into a bunker, and then blasted that out through the green and into the water.

"At Augusta, I can feel like I really didn't play that great and I'm somewhere near the leaderboard", Spieth said. "You feel like no matter what, you're going to make it, and I grew up on an easy golf course so it reminded me of being back home, shooting low numbers". One photo sums up Fowler's day and a curious (and mercurial) relationship with this golf course.

Attitude is everything in golf, especially on this Pete Dye-designed layout created on land that used to be a swamp.

Of course, the list of contenders goes much deeper. Day is coming off a win at the Wells Fargo Championship and is starting to look a lot more like the 2016 version of himself, who won the Players by four strokes that year.

McIlroy is not alone in his struggles.

Spieth was bogey-free until the fifth hole of the final round in his debut in 2014, eventually tying for fourth.

"It was just wonderful", said Spieth, who played with McIlroy and Thomas.

Stricker, even since his mid-40s, when he cut back his schedule to spend more time with his family in Wisconsin and stay fresher, has never fallen out of relevance, and most importantly, his game has never been better. Spieth three-putted from 35 feet, though he shot 68 and ended three consecutive years missing the cut.

However, bogeys followed at the seventh and the tricky par-three eighth to drop the former World No.1 over par for the first time this week.

The Players Championship lost the long-held lustre of being the richest tournament in golf a year ago after the PGA Tour opted not to increase their prize fund from its 2016 level of $10.5m, while both the US Open and Masters increased their treasure chests to $12m and $11m respectively. The PGA Championship is moving from August to May next year, giving golf a run of big events from early spring to late summer.

T7. Si Woo Kim, Jhonattan Vegas, Keith Mitchell, Rory Sabbatini, Steve Stricker, Andrew Landry (-5): Just like we all thought, Rory is in contention this week.

Woods is paired with Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler on Thursday and Friday. This is only the second time they have played with each other on the Stadium Course. He walked off the course five strokes off the lead pace being set by Dustin Johnson and Webb Simpson with the afternoon wave of play ongoing. You have horses (Garcia and Johnson) as well as guys who are terrific on this course (Kuchar and Scott).

Held annually in May, THE PLAYERS is one of the most anticipated tournaments on the PGA Tour calendar, boasting not only the strongest field but also the biggest purse on the PGA TOUR.

Of the previous six golfers who shot 63 at TPC Sawgrass, only three of them went on to win the tournament.
