Question turns to Witten after Cowboys address Bryant void

They ended up having to tout their tight ends as well when ESPN reported on the Arlington draft's second day that Jason Witten was planning to retire after 15 seasons to join the Monday Night Football crew as lead analyst. They aren't as simple as they seemed late last week.

Another TV network has apparently made a "last-minute "interesting" proposal" in an effort to sway Witten, too, likely making the decision even more complicated. Given that Fox now has "Thursday Night Football", that may well be the competition.

In short: It's good to be Jason Witten.

Witten, who turns 36 on May 6, is scheduled to meet with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Friday about the decision to walk away from the game.

While Witten has four seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards, he slowed some previous year with 63 catches for 560 yards and five scores. He is third all-time on the team in receiving touchdowns with 68. Jones said he had several conversations with Witten this week and indicated the franchise leader in games, catches and yards receiving hadn't made a final decision.

The Dallas Morning News reported that ESPN's offer is for $4 million to $4.5 million per year. The Cowboys have similar plans for him, and high hopes for more production than Austin had while the Rams surged to the NFC West title in the first year under McVay after 10 straight losing seasons.

"He also told me those things are going to require a few more days of consideration, at least through the weekend. We have no announcement today as it pertains to Jason's future other than to say that he's a wonderful and valued member of our organization and our family".

The news on the second day of the draft could affect Dallas' plans just a week after Witten suggested he might play until he was 40 and meant to return this coming season.

More than that, Witten was the unquestioned leader of the team.
