Pilot and boy (7) are killed as parachutists' plane crashes in bog

Pilot and boy (7) are killed as parachutists' plane crashes in bog

The aircraft had taken off from Clonbullogue airfield, which is popular with skydivers, at around 2.25pm.

He said the pilot had been hired by the Irish Parachute Club since their own plane was being serviced.

"There was no wavering in it or anything, flat out, the engine roaring".

The bodies were recovered from the wreckage in isolated bogland in Co Offaly just before darkness fell about 10pm last night.

It thanked the emergency services and investigators.

"When it hit the tree line the tail moved and I knew there was something wrong", he said.

It's understood that the light aircraft crashed around 11km from Edenderry.

Other locals described the accident as a shocking accident.

It is understood that the Air Accident Investigation Unit used digging machinery in an attempt to remove the aircraft from the bog because the impact of the crash had driven it into the ground.

The crashed plane had been partially submerged in water and was embedded in the ground after crashing at speed, leading to an exhaustive recovery mission.

Offaly councillor Noel Cribbin said: "This is a big shock to the area". "It's tragic. That's the only word I can use at the moment".

Mr Slattery immediately rang 999 and the parachute club to let them know the location of the crash site.

"The board of directors, members and friends of the Irish Parachute Club are deeply saddened at the death of the occupants of the aircraft that was operating on behalf of the club".

"My thoughts are to all those affected".

"We would like to thank the Air Accident Investigation Unit and the emergency services who are continuing their investigation at this very hard time".

"I've seen them thousands of times", he said.
