MSU settles at $500M with Nassar victims

MSU settles at $500M with Nassar victims

Michigan State University has agreed to pay $500 million to more than 300 victims who were sexually assaulted by former MSU doctor Larry Nassar.

The victims filed lawsuits in federal court in Grand Rapids, Mich., and state courts in California.

The Nassar scandal is the biggest in US Olympic history and has had far-reaching ripple effects - ending careers at USA Gymnastics, the Olympic committee and at Michigan State University. The total settlement amount equals almost 30 percent of the university's total tuition revenue during the 2016-2017 academic year, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to come forward with public allegations of sexual abuse by Nassar, had pressed MSU for reforms to prevent future sexual abuse.

Put into perspective, the settlement reached Tuesday night is historic. "However, I am deeply disappointed at the missed opportunity for meaningful reform and change at the University".

"All these courageous women have power, and we will use our voices to make sure you get what you deserve, a life of suffering spent replaying the words delivered by this powerful army of survivors", she said. Since then, nearly 300 women and girls have publicly accused Nassar of abuse, and almost all during medical appointments.

In this file photo from January 26, 2018, the shadows of Michigan State University students appear on "the rock" in the university campus which was painted "Thank You" and includes the names of the women who gave victim impact statements during the Larry Nassar sexual assault sentencing hearing in East Lansing, Michigan.

Lawyers representing 332 Nassar victims negotiated the settlement with the school.

The settlement surpasses the $109m that Penn State University agree to pay in 2017 to settle claims by at least 35 people against American football coach Jerry Sandusky. We appreciate the diligent efforts of Mick Grewal and the survivors' attorneys throughout the nation who worked to obtain this measure of justice and healing. The organization previously said it was unaware of the abuse until 2015.

"This has been a very long and exhausting road, especially for those who have been so vocal from the very beginning of this case", Lemke said in a statement Wednesday.

The deal was introduced Wednesday by Michigan State and legal professionals for 332 victims.

The state criminal inquiry into the university has so far yielded charges against William Strampel, the former dean of the MSU medical college where Nassar practiced.

MSU gymnasts had alleged Nassar sexually assaulted them as early as 1997.
